My husband Alex and I both work, and our four-year-old Lili spends most of the day at preschool. When my mother-in-law said, “Let her have a little break and a day with grandma,” I thought: okay. Especially if Lili stayed at home — in her usual environment.
At first, everything went smoothly. But then… strange things started. Lili began saying mysterious things.
At dinner, she suddenly refused to eat with me:
— I only want to eat with daddy, grandma, and her friend.
— Which friend, sweetheart? — I asked.
She just smiled and took a sip of juice.
And at night, before sleeping, she whispered:
— Mommy, why don’t you like our friend?..
— Who told you that?
— She did. She said you don’t understand yet, but she is part of our family…
A cold shiver ran through me. Over the weekend, I cautiously asked my mother-in-law. She shrugged:
— Probably an imaginary friend. Children have such vivid imaginations…
But her voice was tight like a string. I couldn’t take it. I found an old camera and installed it in the living room.
On the next recording, everything seemed calm. Until my mother-in-law said:
— Lili, you remember, right? That we don’t tell mommy…
The doorbell rang.
Lili jumped up happily:
— It’s her! She came to play with my hair!

A woman appeared in the doorway. Tall, with chestnut hair, wearing a light coat. Lili jumped up and shouted:
— Aunt Maja!
I froze. Maja? But… it couldn’t be. Alex hadn’t mentioned her name since that argument. For almost two years he refused to speak to her, and I didn’t even know all the details. The family was broken — seemingly forever.
On the video, Maja knelt down and hugged Lili like she was the most precious treasure in the world. Then I heard:
— You are my little joy… I missed you so much, darling. Sorry I was away so long.
Then Eliana appeared in the frame. She approached and said softly but seriously:
— Remember, Lili, what we agreed? We don’t tell daddy yet.
And everything made sense. It wasn’t a scary secret, but an attempt to mend what was once broken.
The next morning I sat down to talk to Eliana. She listened silently, then quietly said:
— I just wanted Lili to have an aunt. And for Maja to have a chance to feel part of the family again. If only Alex… could forgive.
I told Alex everything. He was silent for a long time. Then he only asked:
— Did she miss me too?
And that evening he opened the door himself. And Maja came in.
They stood and looked at each other — brother and sister, separated by years of pride and pain.
