After returning from a holy place, I found an envelope containing money for the operation I had been dreaming of for so long in my bag

After returning from a holy place, I found an envelope containing money for the operation I had been dreaming of for so long in my bag. But when I read the note and discovered who had left the money for me, I couldn’t hold back my tears. I never would have imagined that this person would do something like that for me… 😢

Six years ago, my only son passed away, and ever since then, I had no one to rely on. At 72, I was living alone in a small apartment. How difficult it is to return to an empty home where nobody is waiting for you!

Recently, my eyesight had begun to deteriorate. The doctor told me I had cataracts and needed surgery.

“Don’t put it off any longer, or your eyesight may get even worse.”

But where was I supposed to find the money? My pension barely covered my housing costs, medication, and food. I was still two thousand short for the operation.

Every year, I traveled to a holy place to pray. I went again that year, even though traveling had become difficult for me.

There, I met a woman who looked to be about forty-five. She noticed me stumbling and helped me regain my balance.

“Are you alone, Grandma?”

“Yes, dear. My son passed away. There’s nobody left to help me now.”

I told her about my eyesight problems and the operation I needed.

“I’m afraid of going completely blind, sweetheart. Who will take care of me then?”

The woman didn’t answer. She simply held my arm a little more firmly.

She helped me throughout the day, bought me some hot tea, and looked after my bag while I prayed.

When it was time to say goodbye, I hugged her.

“Thank you, my dear! What’s your name?”

“Anna.”

That evening, after returning home, I began emptying my bag and suddenly found an unfamiliar envelope in the side pocket.

I opened it and gasped. There was money inside! I counted it twice.

Exactly two thousand! Precisely the amount I had been missing!

There was also a note inside. I put on my glasses, moved closer to the lamp, and began to read.

When I understood who had left the money for me and why, I sank into a chair and burst into tears. I had never expected this person to do something like that for me…

The note read:

“Dear Grandma,

Please forgive me for putting the money in your bag without asking your permission. I was afraid you would refuse if I offered it to you in person.

Today, while we were talking, you reminded me so much of my mother that I could barely hold back my tears.

I buried her two years ago. She also had poor eyesight and complained about her eyes, and I kept promising that I would take her to the doctor.

“Mom, please be patient a little longer. We’ll definitely go next week,” I used to tell her.

But there was work, the children, and household chores… There was always something that seemed more important.

Then my mother became seriously ill. By the time I finally decided to take care of her health, it was already too late.

Do you know what torments me the most? Before she died, my mother told me she didn’t hold anything against me. And yet, I still can’t forgive myself.

Today, you told me that you were afraid of going blind because there would be nobody to hand you a glass of water. And I remembered my mother.

Please accept this money and have the operation. I don’t want anything in return. I simply want things to turn out well for you, at least.

With love, Anna.”

I finished reading the note and sat motionless for a long time. My tears fell directly onto the paper.

“Oh, God, my dear child…” I whispered. “How could I ever forget something like this?”

I didn’t even know that woman! We had met for only a few hours, yet she had done more for me than some people do in an entire lifetime.

I took the photograph of my son from the shelf.

“Do you see, my darling?” I said, looking at his face. “You always told me that good people existed. But after you died, I almost stopped believing it.”

That night, I couldn’t fall asleep for a long time. Sometimes I got up to count the money once again; other times, I reread the note. I wanted to find Anna, hug her, and tell her how much she had done for me.

The next morning, I called the doctor.

“Doctor, I’ve managed to gather the money. Can I schedule the operation?”

“Of course!” he replied. “I’m glad you haven’t put it off any longer.”

A few weeks later, I had surgery on my first eye. Everything went well. When the doctor removed the bandage, I suddenly saw his face much more clearly than before.

I burst into tears right there in his office.

“What happened? Are you in pain?” the doctor asked anxiously.

“No, my dear. It’s just that I can see again!”

When I returned home, the first thing I did was walk over to my son’s photograph. Now I could clearly see his smile, which I had previously seen as if through a fog.

“My son, if only you knew what a kind young woman I met…”

Almost a year passed. I often thought about Anna and regretted not asking for her last name or phone number.

When it was time for my next trip, I returned to the same place. But this time, there was an envelope in my bag containing a letter for Anna.

I wrote that the operation had been successful and that I could read, cook, and leave the house without worry again. I also told her that I thanked her for her kindness every single day.

All day long, I looked around, hoping to see a familiar face. But Anna never appeared.

I returned home feeling a little disappointed. Then I thought: perhaps I didn’t actually need to find her to show my gratitude.

A few days later, I noticed an elderly woman in a shop. She was standing at the checkout, counting her coins. She didn’t have enough money to buy bread and milk.

I approached her and paid for her groceries.

“Thank you, dear,” she whispered. “I’ll pay you back, I promise.”

“You don’t need to, my dear. Just help someone who is struggling when you get the chance.”

The woman squeezed my hand tightly, and suddenly, I thought of Anna again.

That was when I understood that the best way to thank her was to never turn a blind eye to someone else’s hardship.

I still keep Anna’s note beside my son’s photograph. Sometimes I read it again and cry, but now it’s no longer only out of sadness.

That day, I had asked for just one thing: the chance to see again. But I received something else, too—the belief that even a complete stranger can offer you the care and kindness you need so desperately.

And now, whenever someone tells me that there are no good people left in the world, I take out that very note and reply:

“Yes, my dear ones, they still exist. Sometimes they enter our lives precisely when we’ve stopped expecting them.”
