On his 70th birthday, my husband invited two women I had never seen before and then said, “Each of you holds an important place in my life, but you don’t know the whole truth about each other.” When I discovered who they really were, I was so shocked that I couldn’t say a single word… 😱
On the day my husband turned seventy, I woke up before dawn because of a strange noise coming from the kitchen. Viktor usually slept until late in the morning, but that day he was already dressed in a white shirt and a dark navy tie.
He was searching for something in the cupboard and looked visibly nervous. When he saw me, he quickly closed the door.
“Why are you up so early?” I asked.
“A seventy-year-old man is allowed to get nervous on his own birthday sometimes,” he said with a smile.
But I noticed that his fingers were trembling. The corner of a white envelope was sticking out of his breast pocket.
Viktor had said beforehand that he didn’t want a big celebration. He planned to invite only a few people, but at the last moment, our son told us that he wouldn’t be able to come.
So that evening, only the two of us and two women I had never met before were sitting around the festive table.
One of them was named Sofia. She arrived first, wearing a dark dress and carrying a small cake. When I opened the door, she studied me carefully for several seconds.
“So you’re Elena…”
I was surprised that this stranger knew my name.
When Sofia saw Viktor, her expression changed. He wanted to hug her, but she simply held out her hand.
“Happy birthday.”
“You’ve hardly changed at all,” my husband said quietly.
“But you’ve changed a great deal,” she replied coldly.
A few minutes later, the second guest arrived — Natalia. A pearl necklace shimmered around her neck. Viktor introduced her as a woman from a distant chapter of his past.
No one felt comfortable at the table. Sofia barely ate, Natalia kept looking at the clock, and Viktor repeatedly touched his pocket.
Finally, he raised his glass.
“Today, I no longer want to keep a certain secret. It’s time to tell you everything.”
He took out not one envelope, but three, and placed them in front of us.
“Each of you holds a special place in my life. But you don’t know the whole truth about each other… 😳😮”
The continuation of the story — in the first comment 👇👇
I slowly opened the first envelope. Inside was an old photograph of Viktor and a young Sofia. On the back was a date — forty-eight years earlier.
“Sofia was my first wife,” Viktor said quietly. “We separated when we found out we were going to have a child. I was young, I was afraid of the responsibility, and I left. I thought that one day I would be able to make everything right.”
I could hardly breathe.
Then Viktor opened the second envelope. Inside was a birth certificate.
“Sofia gave birth to a daughter. But I didn’t find out about it until many years later.”
Natalia looked at me silently and then took a third photograph from her handbag.
It showed a young woman who looked remarkably like Viktor.
“That’s me,” Natalia said. “And I’m the daughter he left behind all those years ago.”
Silence filled the room.
I looked at my husband, and for the first time, I saw not fear of being exposed in his eyes, but genuine remorse.
“Why did you tell us everything today of all days?” I asked.
Viktor let out a heavy sigh.
“Because I’m seventy. And I’ve realized that I don’t want to carry this lie with me anymore. At least now, I want to be a father to Natalia and ask Sofia for forgiveness.”
Sofia remained silent for a long time before finally saying:
“I can’t change the past. But perhaps we can stop living with its pain.”
I took Viktor’s hand. I hadn’t forgotten his betrayal, but I understood something important: sometimes a person truly needs an entire lifetime to finally find the courage to tell the truth.
And that evening, his birthday became more than a celebration of his seventieth year. It became the first day when our family finally learned the whole truth.
