At 78 years old, I never could have imagined that my son’s fiancée would force me to get down on my knees and wash her feet in my own home. But when my son unexpectedly returned home, something happened that left us both in shock… 😨
After my husband died, I was left alone in the house where we had lived together for almost forty years. When my son, Daniel, asked if he and his fiancée, Vanessa, could move in with me, I was delighted. I had missed hearing the voices of my loved ones around the house so much.
When Daniel was around, Vanessa was the picture of kindness. She hugged me, asked about my health, and called me Mom. But as soon as my son left the house, the criticism began.
My photographs annoyed her, and she didn’t like my cooking. One day, she even forbade me from watching television in the living room.
I put up with everything for my son’s sake. He loved her so much and was eagerly looking forward to their wedding.
Everything changed on a Friday when Daniel went out to pick up some documents. Vanessa came back from outside with dirty shoes and left muddy footprints on the clean floor.
“Margaret, get a cloth and clean up after me.”
“Vanessa, my knees are hurting terribly today. Please, wipe it up yourself.”
She sat down on the sofa, stretched out her legs, and smirked.
“Then get down on your knees and wash my feet. That way, you’ll understand who’s in charge of this house now.”
I stared at her, unable to believe my ears.
“This is my house! How dare you speak to me like that?”
“I’ll tell Daniel that you’re insulting me and trying to throw me out. He’ll believe me, not you. And then you’ll be completely alone!”
My hands began to tremble at her words. I was afraid of losing my son. With tears in my eyes, I picked up a towel and began lowering myself onto my aching knees.
Vanessa smiled with satisfaction and held out her foot.
Suddenly, the front door opened.
“Mom?! What are you doing?!”
Daniel stood in the doorway. Beside him was a man I didn’t recognize.
Vanessa jumped to her feet and rushed toward her fiancé.
“Darling, your mother is making a scene again! I was only trying to help her!”
But Daniel didn’t even look at her. He helped me stand up and then turned to the man beside him.
“Robert, tell her why I asked you to come here.”
The man took out his phone, looked at Vanessa, and said:
“I think she should first explain what she did yesterday while neither of you was home…”
Vanessa turned pale and grabbed the back of the sofa.

“What did she do yesterday?” Daniel asked, looking at Vanessa.
Robert handed him the phone.
“Yesterday, your fiancée came to my office. She wanted to find out how she could have your mother’s house transferred into her name.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. Robert was the lawyer who had been helping our family for many years.
“That’s not true!” Vanessa shouted. “I was just asking about the paperwork!”
“Then why did you say that Margaret was already losing her mental faculties and would soon be unable to make decisions for herself?” Robert asked calmly.
Vanessa fell silent.
Daniel slowly sat down on the sofa.
“You told me you loved my mother. That you wanted to take care of her…”
“And you thought we were going to spend our entire lives in this old dump?” Vanessa suddenly burst out. “Your mother lives alone in a huge house! We could sell it and buy ourselves a decent home!”
I stood nearby, gripping the table for support. It hurt to hear the woman I had been ready to welcome into my family talking about my house as if it already belonged to her.
“Vanessa,” my son said quietly, “pack your things.”
“What?!”
“I said leave. There will be no wedding.”
She burst out laughing.
“Are you serious? Over that old woman who can’t even take care of herself?”
Daniel stood up.
“This woman raised me and worked two jobs when my father became ill. And you forced her to kneel in front of you!”
Vanessa tried to take his hand, but he pulled away.
“I’ll explain everything, darling…”
“I don’t need any more explanations.”
Half an hour later, she was gone, slamming the door behind her.
When we were finally alone, my son came over and hugged me as tightly as he hadn’t in many years.
“Mom, why didn’t you tell me anything?”
I couldn’t hold back my tears.
“I was afraid, sweetheart. I thought you’d choose her and stop coming to visit me.”
He gently took my hands in his.
“Forgive me. I should have realized much sooner how she was treating you.”
The next day, Daniel called off the wedding, and Robert helped me check the property documents. Fortunately, Vanessa hadn’t managed to transfer anything into her name.
My son stayed with me for a few more weeks. Now he prepared breakfast himself, drove me to my doctor’s appointments, and asked me every evening how my day had gone.
One day, I saw him washing the floor in the entryway and smiled without even realizing it.
“Son, I can do that myself.”
He came over, kissed me on the cheek, and replied:
“I know, Mom. But now, let me take care of you, too.”
That evening, for the first time in a long while, I no longer felt like a lonely old woman who was a burden to everyone. Instead, I felt like a beloved mother in her own home.
