Seventeen years later, my ex-husband came to visit me in my village in an expensive car, accompanied by his young wife. When he saw me wearing dirty rubber boots and holding a bucket of potatoes, he burst out laughing. “You could have been living like a queen with me! Instead, you’re digging around in the dirt like a beggar!” But he had absolutely no idea who was standing behind me, listening to every word he said … 😨

I recognized that laugh immediately. Seventeen years had passed, but Viktor hadn’t changed one bit.

I had just brought some potatoes in from the garden when a large black car stopped by the gate. Viktor stepped out, followed by a young woman wearing a light-colored coat.

“Well, hello, Lena!” he said with a smile. “I see everything is still the same around here!”

He looked around the yard, at the old fence and my rubber boots, then shook his head.

“You’re really still living here?”

“Yes, Viktor. And I’m not complaining.”

“Well, you should be! If you had come to the city with me back then, you wouldn’t want for anything today. I have an apartment, a car, and a good job. And you’re still hauling potatoes around!”

His wife gave an awkward smile.

“Viktor, why don’t we just leave? Why do you have to talk to her like that?”

But he seemed not to hear her.

“No, Kristina, let her see what she missed out on! I offered her a decent life.”

I felt my fingers tighten around the handle of the bucket. Seventeen years earlier, this man had abandoned me when I was pregnant, without even wondering how I would raise our child.

And now he was standing in front of my house, laughing at me.

“If things ever get really difficult for you, get in touch,” he added. “Maybe I can find you a job as a cleaner.”

Viktor had no idea who was standing behind me and had heard every word he said … I was just about to walk away when the front door opened and someone appeared in the doorway. The moment Viktor saw that person, he turned pale, while his young wife stepped back in shock … 😨

Standing in the doorway was my seventeen-year-old daughter, Alina. She had the same gray eyes as Viktor. He stared at her, unable to utter a single word.

“Mom, is that him?” my daughter asked quietly.

I nodded.

“Who is she?” Viktor finally managed to ask.

“Your daughter. The very child you rejected before she was even born.”

Kristina stepped away from her husband.

“What daughter? Viktor, you told me you didn’t have any children!”

“I’ll explain everything,” he muttered.

But Alina didn’t let him finish.

“You know, I’ve wanted to meet my father my entire life. I imagined what I would say to him when we finally met. But today, I heard you laughing at my mother. And now I don’t even know why I would want a father like you.”

Viktor lowered his eyes.

“Alina, I was young and foolish back then …”

“And what about now?” she asked. “You’re a grown man now. So why are you still behaving so cruelly?”

Kristina turned toward me.

“Lena, did he know about the baby?”

“Of course. He left a month before I gave birth. He said he wasn’t going to waste his life on diapers and the poverty of village life.”

“You told me she was the one who left you!” Kristina exclaimed.

Viktor tried to take her hand, but she pulled away.

“For seventeen years, you haven’t cared about your own child, and today you come here to humiliate her mother? I don’t want to talk to you right now.”

She headed toward the car.

Viktor looked at me in confusion.

“Lena, I didn’t know how you were living …”

“You didn’t even try to find out. And don’t worry about us. I own a bakery and two shops. I grow potatoes because I love my garden, not because I have nothing to eat.”

He raised his head in surprise.

“You have your own business?”

Seventeen years later, my ex-husband came to visit me in my village in an expensive car, accompanied by his young wife

“For eight years now. But this isn’t even about money, Viktor.”

Alina took my arm.

“Mom, let’s go inside.”

Viktor took a step toward his daughter.

“Alina, maybe we could talk sometime?”

She stopped.

“Maybe. But not today. First, think about how much pain you’ve caused Mom.”

We went inside. Through the window, I watched Viktor stand by the gate for a few more minutes before silently getting into his car.

Alina hugged me and suddenly burst into tears.

“Mom, why is he like that? You’ve done so much for me …”

I held her tightly against me.

“Don’t cry, sweetheart. The most important thing is that we have each other.”

A week later, Viktor asked his daughter to forgive him. She replied that she wasn’t ready to meet him yet. I didn’t try to persuade her.

That evening, instead, we cooked dinner together, laughed, and made plans for her university application.

That was when I realized I had no regrets. Seventeen years earlier, Viktor had left me alone with a child. He thought I would fall apart without him. Instead, I raised a wonderful daughter, built my own business, and kept the home where we were both happy.

Only then did I know for certain that what made me a queen wasn’t an expensive car or beautiful dresses, but the life I had managed to build with my own hands.
