For seven years after my daughter’s death, I gave her husband $40,000 every year to help raise my granddaughter

For seven years after my daughter’s death, I gave her husband $40,000 every year to help raise my granddaughter. But one day, she asked me, “Grandpa, please stop giving Dad money and keep an eye on him this Friday.” I listened to her, but what I saw made me question even my own daughter’s death… 😨

My only daughter, Laura, had died in a car accident seven years earlier. The car caught fire, and her body was so badly damaged that we weren’t even allowed to say goodbye to her.

Six months later, my wife died of a heart attack. After that, my granddaughter Emma was all I had left.

I trusted Mark, my daughter’s husband, completely. Every January, I transferred $40,000 to him so the girl would never have to go without anything. Throughout all those years, I never once asked him what he spent the money on.

Every two weeks, I picked Emma up for a walk. We bought ice cream and sat beneath a large oak tree in the park. She told me about school, her friends, and the little things that made her happy.

But that day, my granddaughter was unusually quiet.

“Grandpa, please don’t give Dad any more money,” she whispered suddenly.

“Why, sweetheart? That money is for you.”

Emma glanced around nervously.

“No, Grandpa. Dad spends it on completely different things.”

“Like what?”

“I’m afraid to tell you. He forbade me from talking to you about it.”

I hugged her and promised not to tell anyone about our conversation. Then Emma took my hand and spoke softly.

“Dad is going there again on Friday. Follow him, and you’ll see everything for yourself.”

On Friday, I waited until Mark left the house and followed him in my car. He stopped in front of a small house outside the city, got out, and knocked on the door.

A woman opened it. When I saw her, I could hardly believe my eyes.

I recognized her immediately, even though the last time I had seen her was seven years earlier, just a few days before my daughter died.

But what frightened me even more was what I heard Mark say to her.

I realized that for all those years, I had been giving money to a man who was hiding the truth about Laura’s death from me.

And now I had to find out what had really happened to my daughter… 😨

“You promised me he would never find out anything,” Mark said irritably. “I’ve been getting money from him for seven years. The last thing I needed was for you to ruin everything!”

The woman replied:

“What if the girl tells her grandfather? She’s old enough to understand things now.”

I recognized her voice immediately. It was Diana, my daughter’s former friend. Shortly before the accident, they had a terrible argument, and Laura had stopped speaking to her.

I got out of the car and walked toward the house.

When Mark saw me, he turned pale.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to find out what I’ve been paying you forty thousand dollars a year for.”

Diana tried to close the door, but I caught sight of a large photograph hanging on the wall. In it, Mark had his arms around Diana, and a boy of about six stood beside them.

“So this is where my money has been going?” I asked.

Mark remained silent. Then Diana unexpectedly said:

“You’d better tell him everything. Enough with the lies!”

It turned out that Mark had been cheating on my daughter even before she died. Diana was his mistress. After Laura’s death, they continued seeing each other, and eventually they had a son together.

But I learned something even more horrifying afterward.

“Did Laura know about the two of you?” I asked.

Diana lowered her eyes.

“She found out the day before the accident. She came to my house, confronted me, and said she was going to file for divorce.”

I turned to Mark.

“And then she died?”

He looked away.

“It was an accident.”

“Then why did you tell the police that evening that Laura had been coming from a friend’s house when you knew where she had actually been?”

Mark said nothing.

I remembered how, after the accident, he had rushed us through the funeral arrangements and handled all the paperwork himself. At the time, I thought he was simply trying to spare us any additional pain.

Now I wasn’t sure of anything anymore.

The next day, I contacted a lawyer and told him everything I had discovered. We managed to get the circumstances surrounding the accident reviewed again.

It turned out that Laura really had met Mark that evening after speaking with Diana. They had argued right beside the car. Mark drove away, and Laura headed home alone.

But the investigation uncovered something else, too: a few days before the accident, Mark had secretly taken out a substantial life insurance policy on his wife and named himself as the beneficiary. After her death, he collected the insurance payout and concealed it from our family.

Investigators couldn’t prove that he had deliberately caused the accident. However, forged documents were discovered shortly afterward, which Mark had used to obtain part of the insurance money. A fraud case was opened against him.

I immediately stopped the transfers and went to court to seek custody of Emma. When it came to light that her father had spent years using the money meant for her to support another family, the court granted me custody of my granddaughter.

On the day she moved in, Emma hugged me tightly.

“Grandpa, you won’t give Dad any more money now, will you?”

“No, sweetheart. From now on, I’ll take care of you myself.”

She smiled and, for the first time in a long while, fell asleep peacefully in her own room.

I never found out for certain whether Laura’s death had truly been an accident. But now I knew one thing for sure: her husband had been exploiting our grief for seven years.

And what tormented me most was this: little Emma had uncovered his deception before I did, even though I had spent all that time believing I was protecting her.
