A wealthy ranch owner hired a poor young woman as a kitchen assistant, but when he caught the scent of her apple pie, he suddenly turned pale and demanded that she be brought to him immediately. When he discovered who had taught the girl to make that particular pie, his hands began to tremble… 😨
When 23-year-old Emma arrived at a large ranch, she had almost no money. After her mother’s death, she had been left completely alone and was now looking for any kind of work.
The owner of the ranch was Richard Black, a wealthy and very strict man. His employees were afraid of him. People said he could fire someone in the middle of the night for the slightest mistake.
Emma was hired as a kitchen assistant. On her very first day, the head cook told her:
— The master will be having dinner at home tonight. Prepare something for dessert. Just make sure you don’t waste the ingredients.
Emma decided to bake an apple pie using an old recipe from her mother. She took a worn notebook out of her bag and got to work.
When the pie was almost ready, Richard suddenly walked into the kitchen.
— What is that smell? he asked sharply.
— Apple pie, sir, Emma replied.
The man approached the table. When he saw the pie, he suddenly fell silent.
— Who taught you how to make it?
— My mother.
— What was her name?
— Margaret Wilson.
Richard grabbed the edge of the table. The cook looked at him in alarm.
— This can’t be… he whispered.
Then the man looked at Emma and asked:
— Tell me, did your mother happen to bake this pie with a small letter “M” on the crust?
Emma nodded in surprise.
Richard slowly sank into a chair. When the girl explained why her mother had always left that letter on the pie, he covered his face with his hands and burst into tears.
None of the employees had ever seen him like that. But Emma discovered the most heartbreaking truth a few minutes later, when Richard finally confessed who her mother had really been to him…

— Your mother was my wife, Emma, Richard said quietly.
The girl stared at him in confusion.
— What? My mother was never married to a rich man!
— When we met, I had neither money nor this ranch. We lived in a small house, and your mother baked me a pie like this every Sunday evening. She wrote the letter “M” because I called it “my Margaret’s pie.”
Emma sat down opposite him.
— Then why did you abandon her?
Richard lowered his head.
Twenty-four years earlier, he had left to earn money. Margaret was supposed to join him a few months later, but she never arrived.
— My father told me she had met another man and no longer wanted to see me. I believed him. Then my father died, and I never learned anything more about her.
Emma abruptly stood up.
— My mother told me my entire life that my father had died before I was born. She worked two jobs to support me. And when she became ill, we didn’t even have enough money for a good doctor!
Richard turned pale.
— How old are you?
— Twenty-three.
The man looked at her and suddenly realized something he had never even dared to imagine before.
— Emma… You could be my daughter.
— No! the girl cried, stepping back. — My mother would never have hidden something like that from me without a reason!
Richard asked her to bring him the old recipe notebook. On the last page, he recognized familiar handwriting. Beneath the pie recipe, Margaret had written long ago: “For Richard, who promised he would always come home.”
Emma noticed the inscription for the first time. Until then, she had believed Richard was simply an old acquaintance of her mother’s.
A few days later, Richard found a woman who had worked in his father’s house many years earlier. She confessed that the old man had deliberately separated the two lovers. He didn’t want his son to marry a poor girl, so he convinced each of them that the other had ended the relationship.
Later, a DNA test confirmed that Emma really was Richard’s daughter.
The man offered her money, a house, and anything else she could wish for.
But the girl replied:
— I don’t need your money. I needed a father when I was little. And my mother needed a husband when she became ill.
Richard burst into tears.
— I know I can’t undo what happened. But please, at least let me be there for you now.
Emma didn’t forgive him immediately. However, over time, they began spending time together, and a year later, she was the one who called him Dad for the very first time.
Every Sunday, they baked an apple pie together using Margaret’s recipe.
And Richard always left a small letter “M” on the crust, in memory of the woman he had loved all his life but had never managed to bring back home.
