I came home a day earlier than expected and caught my wife throwing out the elderly woman who had raised me in place of my mother. My wife accused her of stealing a valuable family heirloom, and when I intervened, she gave me an ultimatum: “Choose: either me or that old woman!” But soon, I discovered the despicable plan she had been plotting and taught her such a lesson that she bitterly regretted what she had done… 😨

I returned early from a business trip and hadn’t even fully stepped inside the house when I heard my wife’s screams.

My wife, Valeria, was standing in the kitchen. In front of her, seventy-year-old Marta was crying, clutching an old blue cooking pot against her chest.

“Get out of my house! I’m not going to live under the same roof as a thief!”

The moment Valeria saw me, her expression changed. She claimed that my late mother’s gold brooch had gone missing and that Marta was the only person who had entered the bedroom.

I couldn’t believe my ears.

Marta had raised me since I was six years old. After my parents died, she became the closest person in my life. Whenever I was sick, she spent entire nights sitting beside my bed, and even after I grew up, she always waited for me with a hot dinner.

And now my wife was accusing her of stealing!

“Do you even realize who you’re throwing out of this house?!” I burst out.

Valeria crossed her arms.

“Either she leaves, or I do. Choose!”

Marta didn’t even try to defend herself. She quietly took off her apron and went to pack her belongings. For the first time in our five years of marriage, I felt that I didn’t know the woman I had married at all.

That evening, I went to see Marta. She was sitting beside an old suitcase, wiping away her tears.

I hugged her and told her she wasn’t going anywhere.

But suddenly, Marta grabbed my hand tightly.

“My son, your wife isn’t throwing me out because of the brooch. I accidentally overheard a conversation between her and her brother.”

She told me that Valeria was planning to persuade me to sell part of our family’s land and invest the money in her brother’s business. Marta was standing in their way because she knew how many years my parents had worked hard to build up that property.

Then Marta pulled a pawnshop receipt from her pocket.

It listed my mother’s brooch and the name of the person who had pawned it.

I read the name and froze.

But the worst was yet to come.

“My son,” Marta whispered, “I didn’t want to upset you, but yesterday your wife told her brother something else. She’s planning to get rid of more than just me…”

I looked at the elderly woman and felt my hands turn cold.

That evening, I decided not to say anything to Valeria. I let her believe that I knew nothing.

Because now I was determined to uncover the whole truth and make sure she regretted her cruelty herself… 😨

“What do you mean, she’s planning to get rid of more than just you?” I asked.

Marta lowered her eyes.

“Valeria told her brother that once the land was sold, she wouldn’t need you anymore. She plans to take the money and file for divorce.”

I sat in silence for a long time. For five years, I had lived with a woman I trusted more than anyone else. And all that time, she had already been planning how to leave me with nothing.

I looked at the pawnshop receipt again. It bore the name Victor, Valeria’s brother.

Now I understood why they had accused Marta of stealing.

The next morning, I acted as though nothing had happened. During breakfast, I even told my wife that I was willing to discuss selling the land.

Valeria immediately perked up.

“I told you it was a great deal! Victor has already found a buyer.”

“Excellent. Tell him to come today.”

A few hours later, Victor was sitting in our living room with the paperwork ready. Valeria smiled as she imagined how much money would soon be in her hands.

But instead of signing anything, I placed the pawnshop receipt in front of them.

“First, explain why my mother’s brooch ended up at a pawnshop before Marta supposedly stole it.”

Valeria turned pale.

“I… I can explain.”

“Then explain why you were planning to take the money from the sale of my land and abandon me afterward.”

Victor jumped to his feet.

“That old woman made all of this up!”

I took out my phone and showed them the messages I’d exchanged with the buyer Victor had brought in to close the deal. The day before, I had met the man myself. He told me that Victor had asked him to transfer part of the money into a separate account that I knew nothing about.

Valeria sank onto the sofa.

“Listen, I just wanted us to have a better life…”

“No, Valeria. You wanted a better life at my expense. And you decided to throw the woman who raised me out onto the street.”

I took the documents and tore them to pieces.

I had no intention of selling the land.

That same day, I demanded that Victor leave my house. I told Valeria that I no longer wanted to live with her.

At first, she screamed. Then she cried and begged me to forgive her. She even tried to blame everything on her brother.

But it was too late.

A few weeks later, we began divorce proceedings. I kept the family property and bought my mother’s brooch back from the pawnshop.

That evening, when everything had finally calmed down, I walked into the kitchen.

Marta was standing at the stove, stirring soup in that same old blue cooking pot.

“My son, sit down. Everything is ready,” she said with a smile.

I walked over, hugged her, and burst into tears for the first time in a long while.

“Forgive me, Marta. I should have believed you right away.”

She stroked my head, just as she had when I was a child.

“The important thing is that you realized in time who truly loves you.”

That day, I lost the wife I had trusted for five years. But I saved our home, the memory of my parents, and the person who had never betrayed me.

I married my late husband’s best friend, but on our first wedding night he said: “There’s something in the safe that you need to see before we spend our first night together.”
