While the homeowners were away, the young maid couldn’t resist the temptation. Lucia had been working in the home of Adrian, a wealthy businessman, for eight months. She sent almost her entire salary to her sick mother, so she was terrified of losing her job.
Her situation was especially difficult because of Valeria, her employer’s fiancée. She constantly found fault with Lucia, shouted at her over every little thing, and never missed an opportunity to remind her that she was nothing more than a servant.
One day, the homeowners went out, leaving Lucia alone in the house. After finishing her cleaning duties, she entered Valeria’s dressing room and spotted a beautiful red dress.
She had admired that dress for a long time but had never dared to touch it. This time, however, she couldn’t resist. Carefully, she took it off the hanger and held it against herself in front of a large mirror.
Lucia smiled at her reflection. Suddenly, she wanted to imagine what she would look like wearing such an outfit to a real celebration.
She turned on some music and began twirling in front of the mirror, holding the dress close to her body.
She was so caught up in the moment that she didn’t hear the front door open.
“Lucia?”
The girl jumped in surprise. Adrian was standing in the doorway.
Frightened, she immediately lowered the dress, but to her surprise, the man smiled at her.
“Don’t be afraid. That color really suits you.”
Lucia blushed and was just about to put the dress away when an angry voice rang out behind Adrian.
“So this is what you do when we’re not home?!”
Valeria stood in the doorway. When she saw her dress in the maid’s hands, she flew into a rage.
“You were trying to show off in front of my fiancé?! Do you really think he’d ever be interested in someone like you?!”
Lucia tried to apologize, but Valeria snatched the dress from her hands and threw it onto the floor.
“Get out of my house! I don’t want you here ten minutes from now!”
The girl’s lips began to tremble. She lowered her head so nobody would see her tears and silently went to gather her belongings.
But when Lucia came downstairs into the hallway with her suitcase, she stopped dead in her tracks.
Two large suitcases belonging to Valeria stood beside the front door, and her engagement ring lay on a small table.
Shouting could be heard coming from the study.
“You wouldn’t dare throw me out over some maid!” Valeria screamed.
“This isn’t just about her,” Adrian replied coldly. “I’ve known for a long time what you’ve been doing behind my back.”
A minute later, he came out of the study, spotted Lucia with her suitcase, and stopped her.
“Wait. There’s something you need to know before you leave.”
When Adrian told her what he had discovered, Lucia was so shocked that she nearly dropped her suitcase. It turned out that Valeria didn’t hate her because of the red dress at all, but for a reason the young woman had never even suspected… 😨

“Lucia, you told me several times that money had been disappearing from your room, didn’t you?” Adrian asked.
I nodded, still confused.
“Yes, but Valeria said I’d spent it myself and simply forgotten about it.”
Adrian let out a heavy sigh.
“She was taking your money. And not just yours.”
Lucia turned pale.
A few weeks earlier, Adrian had noticed suspicious transfers from his bank account. He began reviewing his expenses and discovered that Valeria had been secretly sending large sums of money to her former lover.
But the worst discovery came later.
Valeria deliberately hired young maids, then accused them of stealing and dismissed them without paying their wages. She knew that girls from poor families would be too afraid to report her.
Lucia was already her fourth victim.
“I wanted to be certain before accusing her,” Adrian explained. “Today, she showed me herself what kind of person she really is.”
At that moment, Valeria came out of the study.
“You’ll regret this!” she shouted. “Nobody will ever love you as much as I do!”
Adrian calmly placed printed copies of the bank transfers in front of her.
“Love doesn’t steal money or humiliate people.”
Valeria tried to defend herself, but when she realized that everything had been exposed, she grabbed her suitcases and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Adrian returned all the money that had been stolen from Lucia and paid the outstanding wages owed to the young women Valeria had previously deceived. He also ended his relationship with his former fiancée once and for all.
Lucia wanted to leave, but Adrian asked her to stay and offered her a job with a good salary.
“And one more thing,” he added with a smile. “Tomorrow is your day off. Buy yourself a beautiful dress and go visit your mother.”
Lucia could no longer hold back her tears.
A week later, she really did buy a red dress. Only this time, it belonged to her.
And when she stood in front of the mirror again that evening, she smiled.
For the first time in a long while, she no longer had to imagine herself being happy. She truly was happy.
