At our wedding, my mother-in-law came up behind me and cut off the braid I had spent years growing. When I burst into tears, she laughed: “Now you’ll learn who’s in charge in our family!” But the moment my husband called one of the guests over, the smile vanished from her face, and a few minutes later, she rushed toward the exit…😨
At first, I didn’t even understand what had happened. I was dancing with Nick when someone yanked my hair hard. I heard the snip of scissors, and my long braid fell to the floor.
I turned around. Standing in front of me was Marta, my husband’s mother. She held the scissors in one hand and my severed braid in the other.
“What have you done?!” I screamed, grabbing my hair.
“Calm down, Emma!” my mother-in-law sneered. “It’s a family tradition. A bride must leave her old life behind!”
I couldn’t hold back my tears. I had spent almost ten years growing that braid. My late mother loved braiding my hair and always asked me not to cut it short.
Nick rushed over to me.
“Mom, have you lost your mind?! Who gave you the right to do that?!”
“Don’t you dare raise your voice at me!” Marta protested indignantly. “I’m your mother!”
“And Emma is my wife now! Do you even understand what you’ve done?”
The guests fell silent. Some took out their phones, while Marta continued smiling as if nothing terrible had happened.
“So what? It’s just hair! It’ll grow back!”
Nick took off his jacket, gently draped it over my shoulders, and carefully wrapped his arms around me.
“Emma, forgive me. I never thought she was capable of something like this.”
Then he looked at one of the guests sitting nearby.
“David, you saw everything, didn’t you? Please come over here.”
Marta spun around. When she saw the man getting up from his table, she turned pale.
“Nick, why are you calling him?” she asked nervously.
But David had already reached us.
“Marta,” he said, “I think you’ve forgotten what we talked about last week.”
My mother-in-law stepped back.
“Don’t you dare tell them anything!” she whispered.
Nick frowned.
“Mom, what’s going on? What are you hiding from us?”
David glanced at the severed braid still in her hand and replied quietly:
“I think it’s time you both learned why Marta hates Emma’s long hair so much…”

“David, shut up!” Marta snapped. “This is a family matter!”
“No, Marta. You’ve just humiliated a young woman in front of a hundred guests. And I’m not going to cover for you anymore.”
Nick held me even tighter.
“David, please explain. What’s going on?”
The man let out a heavy sigh.
“Ten years ago, Marta worked alongside Emma’s mother at a beauty salon. Your mother was the salon manager, while Emma’s mother worked as a hairdresser.”
I looked at him in surprise.
“You knew my mother?”
“Yes, Emma. And I remember perfectly well why she left that salon.”
Marta turned even paler.
It turned out that my mother had discovered Marta was taking some of the money from the cash register. When my mother demanded that she stop, Marta accused her of theft and managed to get her fired.
“I kept the documents,” David continued. “Back then, I was responsible for the salon’s accounting. Last week, Marta found out that Emma was that very woman’s daughter and asked me to keep quiet.”
I could barely breathe. I remembered how my mother had once come home in tears and then struggled for a long time to find another job.
“So you knew whose daughter I was?” I asked my mother-in-law.
Marta looked away.
“Your mother always thought she was better than everyone else!”
“And that’s why you cut my hair?”
“She was always bragging about your braid!” Marta suddenly shouted. “She said she would never let anyone ruin it!”
I stared at the woman who had just become my mother-in-law, unable to believe what I was hearing.
Nick took the scissors from his mother.
“You didn’t just ruin Emma’s hairstyle. You deliberately decided to hurt her because of an old grudge?”
Marta tried to defend herself, but he cut her off.
“Leave, Mom. Right now.”
“You’re kicking your own mother out of your wedding?!”
“Yes. And until you learn to respect my wife, you’re not welcome in our home.”
Marta looked around at the guests, hoping someone would take her side. Nobody defended her. She threw my braid onto the table and hurried toward the exit.
I picked up my hair with trembling hands. Nick gently pulled me close.
“Forgive me, sweetheart. I won’t let her hurt you again.”
The next day, we went to the hairdresser together. I got a beautiful short haircut. At first, it felt strange to look at myself in the mirror, but Nick smiled and said:
“You’re beautiful. No matter what hairstyle you have.”
Later, David gave me the documents proving that my mother had not been guilty of that long-ago theft. I carefully placed them beside her photograph.
For the first time in many years, I learned the truth about why she had lost her job back then.
Marta tried calling Nick several times, but he refused to speak to her until she offered me a sincere apology.
I kept the severed braid in a beautiful box alongside my mother’s photographs.
Not because I wanted to remember the humiliation, but because my mother had once braided that hair with love.
And although my mother-in-law had ruined our wedding day, she hadn’t managed to destroy the most important thing of all: the love and trust between Nick and me.
