“I demand that the house be awarded to me and that I receive full custody of our daughter! My wife must even be forbidden from coming anywhere near us!” my husband declared confidently in court. But when our six-year-old daughter pulled a little purple phone out of her pocket and asked the judge to listen to something, my husband turned pale, and his lawyer grabbed his head in disbelief… 😨
I sat in the courtroom, struggling to hold back my tears. Eleven years of marriage, a home we shared, a beloved daughter—and now Daniel wanted to take everything away from me.
Three months earlier, I had discovered that he was having an affair with a young employee named Vanessa. When I demanded an explanation, he did not even try to justify himself.
“I don’t need you anymore, Claire. Both the house and Lily will stay with me.”
Soon afterward, he filed for divorce and accused me of mistreating our daughter.
In court, his mother, Eleonora, claimed that I constantly shouted at the child. My husband’s lawyer showed photographs of Lily crying beside a broken plate.
“Look what her mother has done to this little girl!” Daniel declared.
My hands began to tremble. I remembered that evening perfectly. Daniel had deliberately frightened our daughter and then intentionally photographed her tears.
“That isn’t true!” I burst out.
My lawyer, Rebecca, gently touched my hand.
“Claire, stay calm. We have evidence of his financial misconduct. But we still need to disprove the accusations against you.”
I looked at Lily. She was sitting beside a court employee, her head lowered, tightly gripping something in the pocket of her dress.
Suddenly, the little girl stood up.
“Your Honor, may I show you something?”
The judge looked at her in surprise.
“What do you have there, sweetheart?”
Lily pulled out a little purple phone.
“Mummy doesn’t know I have it. Daddy told me not to show it to anyone.”
Daniel suddenly straightened up.
“Lily, put that phone away immediately!”
“Mr. Bennett, do not interrupt me,” the judge ordered.
My daughter looked fearfully at her father and then at me.
“There’s a recording of that evening when I was crying. Daddy doesn’t know the phone recorded everything…”
My husband turned pale and leaned toward his lawyer.
“If they hear that, I’m finished. Do something!”
The lawyer looked at him as though he had only just realized whom he was defending.
Lily tapped the screen.
Just a few seconds later, Daniel’s voice rang out through the courtroom. After hearing only the first few words, the judge demanded that the recording be stopped…

“Wait a moment,” the judge said. “How did the child get this recording?”
Lily looked at me fearfully.
“Daddy gave me the phone so I could play with it when he was busy. I accidentally turned on the recording and forgot to switch it off.”
The judge asked for the phone to be handed to a court employee so the recording could be preserved and examined.
Daniel tried to object, but the judge stopped him.
“We will establish exactly what happened. For now, let’s continue listening.”
My husband’s voice came from the phone:
“Lily, turn the plate over!”
“Daddy, why? Mummy will get angry…”
“Do what I say! Then you’ll start crying, and I’ll take a picture of you.”
Next came the sound of breaking dishes, followed by my daughter’s frightened sobs.
“Daddy, please stop! I want to go to Mummy!”
I covered my mouth with my hand. I knew my husband had deliberately frightened our child, but I had never imagined just how cruel he had been.
On the recording, Daniel continued:
“If you want to stay with me in the big house, you’ll tell the judge that Mummy is always shouting at you. Do you understand?”
“But Mummy is nice…”
“Then you’ll never see your toys again!”
The courtroom fell silent.
Daniel sat motionless. His lawyer moved away from him and began writing something down.
The judge called a recess and requested that Lily no longer be questioned in her parents’ presence.
My daughter ran over to me.
“Mummy, you’re not going to leave me now, are you?”
I hugged her so tightly that she let out a little squeak.
“No, sweetheart. I will never leave you.”
A few days later, another hearing took place. The forensic examination confirmed that the recording was authentic. In addition, my lawyer presented bank documents proving that Daniel had been transferring our shared money into accounts belonging to his mistress’s company.
It turned out that he had planned to sell the house after the divorce and keep most of the money for himself.
Eleonora, who had previously accused me of mistreating the child, remained silent this time. When the judge asked whether she had personally witnessed the incidents she had described, my mother-in-law admitted that she knew everything only from what her son had told her.
The judge rejected Daniel’s demands and temporarily placed Lily in my care. Contact between father and daughter was permitted only under the supervision of a specialist until the assessment of the family situation was complete.
Later, after all the circumstances had been examined, it was decided that Lily would live primarily with me. The financial matters were handled separately, and Daniel had to answer for the concealed money transfers.
When we left the courthouse, my daughter held my hand tightly.
“Mummy, will Daddy never make me lie again?”
I knelt down in front of her.
“No, sweetheart. And remember: if anyone asks you to lie or frightens you, you can always tell me everything.”
Lily wrapped her arms around my neck.
“I was afraid you’d be angry with me because of the phone.”
“I will never be angry with you for telling the truth.”
That evening, we returned home, made Lily’s favorite pancakes, and, for the first time in a long while, went to bed peacefully.
Before falling asleep, my daughter placed the purple phone on the bedside table.
“Mummy, can I stop turning it on from now on?”
“Of course, sweetheart.”
I kissed her forehead and turned off the light.
I still had many problems to resolve after the divorce. But the worst was behind us: my little girl was no longer afraid that someone would separate her from me.
