For several days I had noticed that quiet boy in the hallways — the one wearing an enormous, shabby coat. It hung on him like someone else’s shadow: the sleeves covered his hands, the hem almost reached his knees. But he held onto it tightly, as if it were the only thing protecting him from the world.
That day, his “invisibility” ended. Three school bullies noticed him and immediately decided to have some fun.
They surrounded the boy, tugging at the long sleeves, laughing as if competing to see who could humiliate him more.
The boy only whispered, “Please… don’t touch the coat,” trying to keep it on his shoulders. His words were drowned out by their loud laughter.
When they pushed him and he fell to his knees, someone had already taken out their phone. The crowd stayed silent, no one stepped in — as if everything happening was a scene from a play, not someone’s real pain.
And suddenly, the noise stopped.
The students stepped aside on their own as a man in military uniform entered the hallway. General’s stars shone on his shoulders. He walked quickly over to the boy, stopped in front of him, and went down on one knee.
— I’m sorry… for being late, — he said quietly.

It turned out that the general’s arrival was not a coincidence at all.
He calmly explained to the stunned students that the boy’s father had been one of the most loyal and dedicated soldiers in his unit — a man who, during a recent special operation, had knowingly sacrificed his life to save the entire platoon.
The newspapers had reported it dryly, as a mere fact, but for the general it was the loss of a close comrade, a man he trusted as much as himself.
Before that fatal mission, the boy’s father had left one last request: to do everything possible so that his son would not be left alone and would have a future worth risking a life for. The general took those words as a personal duty.
He helped the boy up from the floor, gently adjusted the large coat on his shoulders, and said softly:
— I’m here now. And I will fulfill his request.
