For several days in a row, little Lisa lay in bed — pale, listless, without a smile. Neither toys nor sweets could bring back her former cheerfulness.
She only whispered: «Mom, I want a puppy… or a kitten, like Emma’s». But the mother only sighed heavily and stroked her daughter’s hair.
One evening, the stepfather entered the house — with a radiant smile and a box in his hands. «Lisa, look what I brought you!» — he said, opening the lid.

She grabbed her daughter’s arm, as if protecting her from danger. Terror shone in her eyes. «Out! — she shouted at the husband. — Get out with your creatures!»
The stepfather was confused, but to avoid a scandal, he went out. The next morning, the mother filed for divorce.
