Simon Cowell could not hold back his tears after hearing the heartwarming story of Finn, a heroic police dog whose bravery saved his handlerâs life. A tribute to him will soon be established in a park in his home county.
Finn, a German Shepherd, became a symbÖ l of natiÖ nal herÖ ism in 2016 after puttiŐ¸g himself in harmâs way tÖ prÖ tect his handler, PC Dave Wardell, frÖ m an armed sŐ˝spect in Stevenage, HertfÖ rdshire.
Despite beiŐ¸g stabbed during the dangerÖ us encÖ unter, Finnâs actions prevented even mÖ re severe injuries tÖ his handler. The pair had wÖ rked tÖ gether fÖ r eight years befÖ re this life-chaŐ¸ging event.
Following his recovery, Finn worked for a short time before passing away in 2023 at the age of 14. To honor his memory, a fundraising campaign successfully raised ÂŁ40,000, and plans for a permanent statue to commemorate Finn are now in progress.
The bond between PC Wardell and Finn was undeniable, as they had been inseparable during their years of service together.
In addition to honoring Finnâs memory, Wardell has worked to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by all service animals, leading to the enactment of “Finnâs Law” in 2019, which makes it harder for people to claim self-defense when injuring service animals.
Mr. Wardell expressed that Finnâs legacy would be preserved through the memorial and the law, saying, âIf it werenât for him, I wouldnât be here today.â The memorial will provide a place for future generations to pay their respects and learn about Finnâs extraordinary service.
