The housekeeper secretly sent me a message: “Sir, come home immediately! Your mother is trying to drown Emily!” I dropped everything and raced home, but when I arrived, I saw something that made my blood run cold… 😱
After my wife died, Emily was all I had left. My little girl, who fell asleep every night clutching a photograph of her mother. I would have given my life for her! I never imagined that one day I would have to protect her from my own mother.
Six months earlier, my mother had moved in with us. I trusted her more than anyone else. But before long, Emily began to fear her grandmother.
— Daddy, please don’t leave me alone with her! — my daughter whispered one day, clutching my shirt.
I hugged her, promised that everything would be all right, and left for work. To this day, I hate myself for not listening to my child that morning.
An hour later, I received a message from our housekeeper, Rosa:
“Sir! Your mother is holding Emily underwater in the pool! COME HOME IMMEDIATELY!”
I don’t even remember how I made it to my car. My hands were shaking so badly that I could barely get the key into the ignition. I called Rosa repeatedly during the entire drive, but she didn’t answer.
As I later discovered, my mother had switched off the security camera, sent Rosa to clean the second floor, and taken Emily out to the pool.
Rosa happened to glance out of the window and saw the grandmother holding my daughter’s head underwater. The little girl was struggling desperately, trying to break free.
Rosa rushed into the yard, but my mother ordered her to leave. At that moment, our golden retriever, Max, jumped into the pool, and Rosa immediately plunged in after him.
When I burst into the yard, Emily was lying unconscious on the grass. Rosa was trying to help her breathe, while Max whimpered beside them.
— EMILY! MY BABY GIRL! — I dropped to my knees beside her. — Please, open your eyes!
I had already called an ambulance when my daughter finally began coughing and managed to whisper weakly:
— Daddy… Grandma said I have to die just like Mommy…
I felt something inside me shatter.
I raised my head. My mother was standing on the porch and wasn’t even trying to approach her granddaughter.
— David, she’s making all of this up! — she said coldly.
Just then, Rosa grabbed my arm.
— Sir, your daughter is telling the truth. But there’s more. I heard what your mother said to Emily before pushing her into the water…
When Rosa repeated those words, I realized that my wife’s death might not have been an accident either…

— What did she say? — I asked, barely recognizing my own voice.
Rosa looked at my mother and quietly replied:
— She told Emily: “Your mother didn’t want to listen to me either. And look what happened to her. Now it’s your turn.”
My legs nearly gave way.
My wife, Sarah, had died eight months earlier. She had fallen down the stairs in our house while I was away. My mother had been the first to find her and call an ambulance. The doctors hadn’t been able to save Sarah.
I still remembered how my mother had hugged me at the funeral and kept repeating:
— Stay strong, son. Now we have to take care of Emily.
And now I was looking at the woman who had raised me, feeling afraid of her for the first time in my life.
— Mom, what did you do to Sarah?
— Have you lost your mind?! — she screamed. — That servant is turning you against your own mother!
But Rosa refused to back down.
— Sir, after your wife died, I found her broken phone behind the wardrobe near the staircase. Your mother ordered me to throw it away. I didn’t obey her. I still have it.
At that moment, the ambulance arrived. I went to the hospital with my daughter, and on the way, I called the police.
Thankfully, the doctors managed to save Emily. They kept her under observation but assured us that she would recover.
That same evening, I handed Sarah’s phone over to the investigators and asked them to look into the circumstances surrounding her death.
A few days later, experts managed to recover part of the recordings. It turned out that on the day she died, my wife had switched on the voice recorder during an argument with my mother.
I heard Sarah’s voice:
— Margaret, I’m going to tell David everything! You will no longer control what happens in our home or frighten my daughter!
Then my mother’s voice rang out:
— You’ll regret deciding to throw me out!
After that, there were footsteps, Sarah’s scream, and a terrifying crash.
I listened to the recording and couldn’t stop crying.
My mother was arrested. During the investigation, it emerged that Sarah had indeed planned to forbid her from coming to our house. My mother was afraid of losing her influence over me and her access to my money.
That day, Emily had also confessed to her grandmother that she had seen her push her mother down the stairs. The little girl had kept silent for a long time because her grandmother had threatened her.
When my mother realized that her granddaughter might reveal everything, she decided to get rid of her too.
At the trial, Rosa testified. The investigators presented the recovered recording along with evidence of the attack at the pool. My mother was found guilty and sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
I never visited her. Not even once.
A year and a half has passed. Emily is laughing again, going to school, and hardly ever waking up from nightmares anymore. Max never leaves her side, and Rosa now lives with us as a true member of the family.
Recently, my daughter hugged me and asked:
— Daddy, does Mommy know that we’re safe now?
I held her close and replied:
— I really want to believe that she does, sweetheart.
That evening, I sat beside my daughter’s bed for a long time, listening to her peaceful breathing.
I lost the woman I loved because of someone I had trusted my entire life. And I had nearly lost my daughter too.
But now I know one thing for certain: no one will ever make my little girl feel afraid in her own home again.
