My elderly neighbor was feeding milk to the rats։ I was outraged that she had turned the entire yard into their den

😱😵 My elderly neighbor was feeding milk to the rats. I was outraged that she had turned the entire yard into their den. But her answer shocked me more than the rats themselves.

I was coming home from work tired, thinking only about getting to my house, when I saw something that took my breath away.

Our shared yard was literally crawling with rats. They ran everywhere, rustled in the grass, climbed the garbage bins — it looked as though the yard belonged to them, not to people.

Panicking, I rushed to my elderly neighbor’s door and began knocking desperately.
— Come out! Look at what’s happening here!

The door opened, and the neighbor looked surprisingly calm, as if she were seeing ordinary birds instead of a swarm of rodents.
— Don’t worry, — she said gently. — They came for the milk.

I froze. But when I looked more closely, I noticed dozens of neatly arranged saucers of milk around the yard. Rats crowded around each one, drinking noisily and pushing each other.

— Are you out of your mind? Do you understand what you’ve done? — I burst out. — Because of you, the entire yard has turned into a rat colony!

I expected excuses, indignation, even signs of madness. But she replied with such calm and unexpected words that I was literally speechless.

😵😲 What she said next completely overturned my understanding of what was happening — and of her herself.

The neighbor sighed, as if I were a tired student and she a strict but patient teacher.

— Do you think I’m giving them milk just like that? — she said calmly and closed the door slightly so the smell from outside wouldn’t enter. — Believe me, I’m not trying to turn the yard into a rat nest. On the contrary — I’m trying to get rid of them.

I frowned, not understanding anything. Then she nodded toward one of the saucers.

— There are additives in the milk. They’re not poisonous in the usual sense, but they harm the rats. They like the smell — I add a bit of whey powder and a bait with a grain aroma they love. For them, it’s a treat.

She spoke quietly but confidently, as if she had planned every step long ago.

— But there’s a catch, — she continued. — Rats can hardly tolerate large amounts of lactose. Their bodies can’t process it. If they drink too much milk, their digestive system collapses and they simply don’t survive.

I stood in the doorway, stunned.
— I studied this for months, — she added. — I didn’t want to use strong poisons: pets could get hurt. This way… they come on their own, drink on their own, and the problem resolves quietly, without danger to others.

Her voice was so calm and deliberate that it made me feel uneasy.

What I mistook for madness turned out to be a carefully crafted plan — and for the first time, I realized my neighbor was not nearly as simple as she seemed.
