I was used to night calls. Usually it all ended in trifles — noisy neighbors, a lost dog, teenagers with firecrackers. That evening the patrol was especially quiet: my partner and I were already yawning from boredom.
And suddenly — a little girl ran out of the entrance. Pajamas with bunnies, bare feet, a face covered in tears. She ran straight to our car and barely managed to whisper:
— Under my bed there is a man. With a mask.
At first I thought — child’s imagination. But in her voice trembled real panic.
We went up to the apartment. The mother smiled awkwardly and assured us that her daughter often “saw monsters in the corners.” The girl’s room looked calm, under the bed — empty. My partner already wanted to joke, but I stopped him:
— No. There is too much terror in her eyes. Let’s check the cameras.

When we saw the footage from the cameras, everything inside us froze. A man in black clothes and a mask had entered the building and gone up exactly where the girl lived. He never came out.
We called for backup and began sweeping the building. Apartment after apartment — surprised, sleepy neighbors, but no one suspicious. Then I returned to that very room.
I sat down again by the girl’s bed, shone the flashlight into the gap between the wall and the furniture… and noticed a strange trail in the dust. As if something heavy had been dragged along the floor.
My heart was pounding in my temples. I moved the wardrobe — and in the narrow niche, pressed against the wall, there he was. Black clothes, mask, knife in hand.
For a second everything froze. Then my partner and I acted automatically: shouts, weapons, handcuffs. The man was restrained and taken out of the apartment.
The girl watched with wide-open eyes, but now — without fear. Only with relief.
Later it turned out: he was a repeat offender, wanted for a long time. He chose apartments where he could hide and wait until the residents fell asleep.
This time it could have ended in tragedy… if not for the courage of a five-year-old girl.
Then I realized one thing: sometimes the truth comes from the mouths of those whom adults are used not to listen to.
And if a child says that there is someone under the bed — it’s better to check. Because one day, it might save a life.
