Five days after the wedding, my husband’s sister hit my hand with a fork and declared, “Now you have to live by our rules,” while my husband simply remained silent. But the real shock was waiting for me in the morning, when I listened to my mother-in-law’s message and realized what they were planning to do to me… 😨
My husband Adrian and I had been married for only five days. I was sure that an ordinary family lunch would help me get to know his relatives better, but after just twenty minutes, I regretted coming.
I reached for the dish of shrimp when Adrian’s sister, Claire, suddenly hit my fingers with her fork.
— The elders first. You’re part of our family now, so get used to our rules.
I looked at my reddened hand, then at my husband. He had seen everything, but he only said quietly:
— Mia, please don’t start a scene.
Claire continued explaining my new “duties.” During holidays, I was supposed to help prepare the food, take care of his parents, and if Claire wanted to stay at our house, she wouldn’t even have to ask for my permission.
Then my mother-in-law calmly added that after the wedding, the family expenses would also have to be discussed with her.
I couldn’t take it anymore.
— Are you also planning to control my bank account?
— You’re husband and wife now. The money should stay in the family, she replied.
I looked at Adrian again. He remained silent.
So I stood up and said to Claire:
— If you want to teach me your family’s rules, first learn to respect my boundaries.
I grabbed my bag and left alone.
But the next morning, my mother-in-law sent me a voice message. After listening to it twice, her words sent a real chill through me. 😱

My mother-in-law spoke calmly, as if everything had already been decided. Starting that month, Adrian and I were supposed to transfer most of our salaries to her, and she would decide how much money we were allowed to keep for our expenses.
But her final sentence made me suspicious:
— Your savings shouldn’t just sit there unused either. Adrian told me there’s quite a substantial amount in your accounts.
I slowly turned toward my husband.
— How does your mother know about my savings?
At first, Adrian tried to avoid answering, but then he admitted that even before the wedding, he had told his mother approximately how much money I had in my accounts and that the apartment we lived in belonged to me.
It turned out they had already discussed using part of my savings to pay off his parents’ debts and later taking out a loan using my apartment as collateral to help Claire buy a home of her own.
— But we’re family, Adrian said. I thought you would agree after the wedding.
I looked at him and couldn’t believe my ears.
— So you had already decided everything without even asking me?
He fell silent.
That was when I understood why, at the family table, they had been so insistent on teaching me to “obey.” They were really testing how far they could go.
I immediately moved the documents and access to my finances to a secure place and made an appointment with a lawyer. Fortunately, the apartment and my savings had belonged to me before the marriage, and we had not yet taken out any joint loans.
When Adrian realized that I had no intention of giving his family my money, he became genuinely angry for the first time.
— You’re destroying our marriage because of money!
— No, I replied. Our marriage ended the moment you decided that marrying me gave your family the right to control my life.
A few weeks later, I filed for divorce.
Claire still tried to accuse me of “not knowing how to be part of a family,” while my mother-in-law called several times and demanded that I reconsider. I no longer argued with them.
Our marriage lasted a very short time, but those few days were enough for me to understand the most important thing: that day at the table, they didn’t simply hit my hand with a fork.
They showed me what my entire life was supposed to look like from then on.
And fortunately, I realized it five days after the wedding, not fifteen years later.
