We’ve always enjoyed exploring coastal paths, soaking in the scenery and discovering nature’s little surprises.
That day, we were wandering along the shore of Fuerteventura, one of the beautiful Canary Islands. The beach stretched ahead of us, and we decided to pause and take in the moment.
As we approached the sand, we froze. The ground looked like it had been covered in popcorn! Tons of small, white, puffed-up shapes were scattered everywhere.
At first, we were convinced it was some kind of ad stunt or maybe an art installation. “Wait, is this actual popcorn? Or some weird kind of sand?” we asked each other, puzzled.
Curious, we bent down and scooped a few pieces into our hands. They were hard — not soft like popcorn at all. In fact, they felt more like small stones. But what were they? And how did they end up on the beach?
The contrast was striking — the bright white pieces popped against the dark, volcanic sand, making it all the more surreal.
That’s when a local passerby saw our confused faces and kindly stopped to explain. What he told us was amazing.
The “popcorn” was actually pieces of dead coral.
When coral dies, it turns white and eventually breaks apart. The ocean’s waves push those fragments toward the shore.
Over time, water and sand smooth the edges, shaping them into these odd, puffed forms — and voilà, you get nature’s version of popcorn!
We were fascinated. Suddenly, the beach wasn’t just beautiful — it was magical. A rare place where nature turns coral into something that looks straight out of a snack bowl.
Nature has the best surprises, doesn’t it?
