The wheels of the wheelchair jolted sharply over the stones as the trail narrowed to almost the width of a single person. Daniel sat in silence, gripping the armrests tighter, while Emma confidently pushed the chair forward.
Beside them paced Rex nervously — Daniel’s German Shepherd, a former service dog. Usually calm, he now growled softly and kept trying to move in front of the wheelchair, as if he sensed something terrible.
— Maybe that’s enough? It’s dangerous here, — Daniel said quietly, looking at the crumbling edge of the path.
Emma gave a strained smile.
— You stay inside all the time. You need fresh air.
After his injury, he hardly ever went outside. Once a strong military man, respected even by commanders, he now struggled to endure the pity of others.
And Emma… at first, she cared for him with such tenderness that no one would have believed how much the news of his inheritance changed her. After his father’s death, Daniel inherited a large construction company, a house, and bank accounts no one had spoken about before.

Rex stood on the doorstep.

A few minutes later, the police were already outside the house. One of the rescuers looked at her too carefully, as if trying to understand her reaction.
— Your husband is alive, — he said briefly. — The dog kept him on a ledge for almost two hours until hikers heard the barking.
Emma’s legs gave way beneath her.
It turned out the wheelchair had not fallen straight down. It had become wedged on a rocky outcrop, and Daniel, despite his injured legs, had managed to hold on to the metal frame with his hands. Rex stayed beside him the entire time. The dog barked until he was hoarse, refusing to let his owner lose consciousness.
But the real horror came later.
Investigators quickly found footage from a parking lot camera near the hiking trail. In the video, Emma could be seen disabling the wheelchair brakes just minutes before the walk. They also discovered a phone conversation she had with a lawyer about her husband’s inheritance.
When Daniel was brought home the next day, he looked exhausted but calm. He stared at Emma for a long time, as if seeing her for the first time.
