The old man took pity on the homeless children and let them in, but during the night, he shuddered in horror when he heard the lullaby the little girl was singing

“We’re orphans… please let us take care of your livestock in exchange for a place where we can spend the night.” The old man took pity on the homeless children and let them in, but during the night, he shuddered in horror when he heard the lullaby the little girl was singing 😢

The sun was already disappearing below the horizon when two children appeared on the deserted road. Eleven-year-old Daniel and his six-year-old sister Mia walked barefoot, tired and thin, with all their belongings fitting into an old sack.

They stopped at the gate of an isolated farm where Robert, a 67-year-old widower, lived. For almost twenty years, the man had avoided people after the deaths of his wife and daughter.

Daniel gathered his courage and said:

— We’re not thieves, and we’re not asking for charity. We want to work. I know how to take care of cows, milk them, and notice when an animal is sick. And my sister knows how to look after chickens. All we need is a corner where she can sleep somewhere warm.

Looking at the exhausted little girl, Robert suddenly remembered his own daughter. He allowed the children to spend one night in the barn, showed them some dry straw and an old blanket, and told them to make sure Mia was covered first.

But during the night, the man heard quiet singing. The little girl was humming a lullaby that his daughter had once sung in exactly the same way.

When the shaken Robert asked Daniel how they knew that song, his entire body trembled when he heard the boy’s innocent answer.😮

— Mom used to sing this song to us, — Daniel replied quietly. — She said she once heard it from a woman who saved her life.

Robert turned pale. His wife had composed that lullaby for their daughter, and almost no one outside the family knew it. He carefully began asking the boy about his mother. When Daniel told him her name and explained that she had grown up in a foster family, Robert felt as though the ground were disappearing beneath his feet.

Many years earlier, after an accident, Robert had been told that his little daughter had died. However, he had never seen her body. It turned out that the girl had been found far from home without any identification documents. She remembered almost nothing and was later taken in by another family.

Before she died, Daniel’s mother had managed to tell her children only a few fragments about her childhood and had taught them that very same lullaby.

Robert took out an old photograph of his daughter. Daniel stared at it for a long time, then pulled the only photograph of his mother out of the sack.

There was almost no doubt left.

Later, the necessary documents and a kinship test confirmed what Robert had been afraid to believe: the children’s mother really was his long-lost daughter. That meant the children standing before him were his grandchildren.

The old man embraced the children and cried for the first time in many years.

— You won’t sleep in the barn anymore, — he whispered. — This is your home.

From that day on, the farm changed. Daniel continued to care for the animals, and Mia looked after the birds, but now they were no longer doing it in exchange for a place to sleep. And Robert finally understood why, after so many years, an old lullaby had once again echoed through his home.
