The doctor stayed silent for a long time, not taking his eyes off the screen of the device, and then suddenly asked: “Tell me honestly… have you had many men?” That question turned the entire life of our family upside down in a single moment… 😳
Ice-cold water ran down her fingers, yet Laura still felt a strange heat inside her. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and barely recognized herself: her skin had become pale and tired, dark circles had appeared under her eyes, and her hair, which she had always been proud of, looked dull and lifeless.
At thirty-seven, she suddenly felt lost. She had a good job, a cozy apartment, a caring husband, but in recent weeks her body seemed to stop obeying her. Nausea, weakness, heaviness in the lower abdomen — all of it frightened her more and more.
From the hallway came the sounds of preparations. Daniel was getting ready for his traditional morning fishing trip: a thermos, fishing gear, boxes of bait. Usually, that familiar bustle calmed Laura, but today every sound triggered anxiety.
— You’re overthinking it again, — her husband tried to smile when he noticed her condition. — It’s probably just your stomach. You’ll rest, take some medicine, and it’ll pass.
But Laura only shook her head.
— No… this isn’t just a minor issue. I feel like something serious is happening inside me. Maybe a tumor… I’ve barely slept for two weeks.
Her husband tried to calm her down, hugged her, promised to take her to the clinic, and kept assuring her that everything would be fine. But fear had already settled deep inside her.
In the taxi, Laura looked out the window at parents with children, at the morning rush of the city, and struggled to hold back tears. After fifteen years of marriage, she and Daniel still had no child.
At first they postponed it, then doctors helplessly shrugged, and later the couple simply came to terms with it.
The diagnostic room greeted her with dim light and the smell of antiseptic. The elderly doctor performed the examination in silence, carefully studying the screen. The minutes dragged on painfully slowly.
Finally, he slowly removed his glasses, looked at Laura with genuine surprise, and said quietly:
— I need to ask you a very strange question… How many men have you had in your life?.. 😳

Laura felt a cold shiver run down her spine. For a few seconds she even thought she had misheard.
— Excuse me?.. — she asked confused, gripping the edge of the disposable sheet tighter. — What does that have to do with the examination?
The doctor didn’t answer right away. He looked at the screen again, pressed several buttons on the device, and only then let out a heavy sigh.
— Please understand me correctly, — he said carefully. — I’m not asking out of curiosity. It’s just that the picture… is very unusual.
Laura’s heart began to beat faster.
— I’ve only had one man, my husband, — she said quietly. — We’ve been together for almost eighteen years. What is happening? Is it something serious?
The doctor took off his gloves and turned to her with a completely different expression — not worried, but rather astonished.
— I don’t see any serious illness, — he said slowly. — You have neither a tumor nor a cyst.
Laura closed her eyes in relief, but she didn’t get a chance to say anything.
— You are pregnant.
A silence fell in the room so deep that the soft humming of the machine could be heard.
— No… — she whispered almost inaudibly. — That can’t be.
The doctor gave a slight smile.
— It can. And the pregnancy is already quite advanced. About twenty weeks.
Laura suddenly sat up on the examination table.
— Twenty?! But I barely have a belly… And for years doctors said the chances were almost zero…
The doctor looked back at the monitor.
— The surprises don’t end there, — he said, smiling faintly for the first time. — That’s exactly why I asked you that strange question. The baby is developing very large… because there are two of them.
Laura turned pale and stared at the screen, unable to say a single word.
— Twins, — the doctor confirmed gently. — Congratulations, future mother.
