The sun slowly sank toward the horizon, and her fear kept growing stronger. Sofia decided to walk in the direction where she believed their car was, but after a few minutes she realized she was completely lost.
The wind suddenly grew stronger, and the sky darkened so quickly as if someone had covered the desert with a huge gray shadow.
Behind the hills, a sandstorm rose. A thick wall of dust rushed straight toward the girl, blocking her view and stealing her breath.
Nearby was a dried riverbed she had planned to cross only minutes earlier, but suddenly muddy water poured through it after heavy rain somewhere far away in the mountains. The current grew stronger with every second.

The girl froze in horror, unable to understand whether she was truly seeing it or whether her mind was already beginning to fail from fear and dehydration. The rushing water carried branches, mud, and stones downstream with a roar, and among them someone was desperately trying to stay above the surface.
Sofia suddenly jumped to her feet and, forgetting her own fear, ran closer. It was a man from the neighboring camp who had also been caught by the storm. He was barely holding onto a large rock and was almost out of strength. The girl began screaming even louder, waving her jacket above her head.
At that very moment, the helicopter suddenly turned back. A bright searchlight cut through the darkness and stopped directly on them.
A few minutes later, rescuers were already descending on ropes. Sofia and the man were lifted aboard almost unconscious from cold and exhaustion.
When the girl finally saw her father’s tearful face, she could not hold back her tears. Later, the rescuers admitted they had noticed her only because of the sudden movements near the rushing water.
If Sofia had not run toward the stranger at that moment, the helicopter might have flown past them for the last time.
