A man invited me to his home for dinner, and I expected an ordinary romantic evening. But instead of a prepared meal, he handed me a bag of groceries and said, “I want to see what kind of homemaker you are and whether you can cook.” I stood there silently for a few seconds, unable to understand what was happening, and then I did something that some of you may judge me for. 😨😲
I was getting ready for a real date, not a quick coffee or a casual walk. Michael and I had met about two months earlier and were gradually getting to know each other. He was forty years old and seemed like a calm, confident man who knew exactly what he wanted.
That’s why I was happy when he called one day and invited me to his place.
— Helen, it’ll be much more peaceful at home. We’ll be able to talk and get to know each other better.
I liked the idea. I even bought a box of premium chocolates he had mentioned once and headed over in a great mood.
It was my first time visiting his home, so I felt a little nervous. I thought the evening might become an important step in our relationship.
Michael greeted me at the door with a smile and gave me several nice compliments. His apartment was clean and fairly cozy, although the air felt a bit stuffy, as if the place hadn’t been aired out in a while.
In the living room, a table had been set. There were two glasses on it, but no food.
— Is dinner still being prepared? — I asked with a smile. — I have to admit, I’m already hungry.
— Of course, — Michael replied calmly. — Come to the kitchen.
I followed him and stopped dead in the doorway.
There were groceries spread across the kitchen table. Nearby sat a pile of dirty dishes, and several things were scattered around as though they had been deliberately left that way.
— There you go, — Michael said with satisfaction. — Everything you need is already here.
I looked at him and then back at the table.
— Need for what, exactly?
He smiled and explained calmly:
— I want to see what you’re like in everyday life. I need a woman who knows how to take care of a home and her man. I’m not looking for a relationship where people simply spend enjoyable time together.
Then he stepped closer and added:
— I deliberately didn’t clean anything up. I’m interested in seeing what you’ll do. Words don’t prove anything. A kitchen immediately reveals a woman’s character.
I stood there in my nice dress, slowly realizing that this was not a joke. He had genuinely decided to test me during our very first date at his home.
Familiar thoughts crossed my mind. Maybe I should help? Maybe this was simply a man’s way of seeing whether a woman could manage a household?
But then I did what I felt was right. 😢 I’m sharing my story and truly hope for your support. You can find the continuation in the first comment. 👇👇
I looked at Michael and said calmly:
— I came here for a date. I didn’t come here to clean your apartment or cook your dinner.
He looked genuinely surprised.
— What’s so strange about that? — he asked. — There’s an apron hanging right there. We’re both adults. I like homemade food. I want borscht, meat patties, and a tidy kitchen. Is that really too much to ask?
After a short pause, he added:
— And what if I get sick one day? Would you just leave then too because you don’t like taking care of a home?
I immediately understood what he was trying to do. Instead of having a normal conversation, he wanted to make me justify myself and feel guilty.
I’m fifty-eight years old. I raised children and spent many years taking care of my family. I know how to cook, clean, do laundry, and keep a household running smoothly. I’ve spent enough time standing over a stove in my life and have no need to prove those skills to anyone.
That’s exactly why I wasn’t about to turn a date into a job interview for a housekeeper position.
— Now I understand who you’re looking for, — I said. — You don’t want a partner. You want a woman who will be a cook, a cleaner, and a caregiver all at once.
Michael was already reaching for the apron to hand it to me.
— Wait, — I stopped him. — You simply chose the wrong format. I came here to talk, relax, and get to know you as a man. I have a kitchen at home too, and I’m not working a second shift today.
His expression changed immediately.
— This is what women are like these days, — he said irritably. — All you care about is restaurants.
— I didn’t apply for a job with you, — I replied calmly. — So I’m not going to take a homemaking test either. I have nearly forty years of family life behind me. That’s more than enough.
I picked up the box of chocolates I had brought for him and headed toward the door.
— Where are you going? — Michael asked in confusion.
— I’m leaving. I don’t see a dinner here. I see a dirty kitchen and a man who decided in advance to test how far a woman would allow him to go.
He shouted angrily:
— Fine, leave! You’ll end up alone anyway!
He probably expected those words to scare me or make me change my mind. But they didn’t affect me at all.
At that moment, I realized something very simple: he wasn’t testing my cooking skills. He wanted to find out whether I would immediately accept rules that only he had created.
If a woman agrees to wash dishes and cook on the first date simply because a man decides to test her that way, those demands can become increasingly serious over time.
I simply walked out of his apartment and never looked back.
