My husband called to say he was leaving me for someone else — he had no idea how I’d react.
I walked into the apartment around 7 p.m. Normally, by this time, my husband would already be home. But that evening, the place was quiet and empty.
The kids were staying with their grandmother, so I wasn’t rushing. I just planned to grab a quick bite, maybe watch something, and head to bed early.
Lately, he’d been coming home past midnight more often than not. And honestly, I’d stopped paying attention. I wasn’t curious anymore.
Then suddenly, my phone rang. His name popped up on the screen. I answered — and he dove straight into it…

—“You’ve probably realized I haven’t been coming home much. I’m seeing someone else. Please don’t overreact.”
He left me for another woman… but why?
I blinked. Not in shock, not in anger — just calmly.
—“Seriously? You chose now to say this? You know I’ve got that hair appointment tomorrow, and you were supposed to take the kids. Couldn’t this wait until then?” I said, masking my irritation with a sigh.
There was a pause. He didn’t know what to say. Clearly, he hadn’t expected this.
—“Anyway, I’m starving. Do you know if we still have mayo in the fridge?”
—“You’re not even going to ask who she is? Why I’m leaving? Don’t you care at all? Don’t you want to fix this? Don’t you love me anymore?”
I took a second, then replied:
—“Honestly? No. Your reasons, your mistress — not my concern. Just tell me… did you take the mayonnaise with you too?”
He stammered.
—“Unbelievable. I’m telling you I’m leaving you, and all you care about is mayonnaise?”
That’s when I figured it was time to hang up.
No tears, no heartbreak. I wasn’t grieving. My only thoughts were for my kids and keeping the house running.
At that moment I realized that spiritually I had left him before he left me at that time.
