The storyline followed two cousins who found themselves stranded on a lush, remote island in the South Pacific. Over time, they adapted to their isolated life, eventually falling in love and having a child together.
While the filmās premise was already controversial, it drew additional criticism because of the actors’ ages. Shields was 14, and Atkins was 18 years her senior.
Speaking on her Now What? With Brooke Shields podcast, the actress reflected on the challenging aspects of filming. āWeāll never see a movie like that again,ā she shared. āIt just wouldnāt be acceptable.ā
Atkins recalled their experiences on set, noting that the director, Randal Kleiser, emphasized the need for certain scenes and instructed the actors to tan their skin in sections to avoid tan lines.
āI remember wearing very little clothing in some scenes, like that slide moment,ā Atkins said. āI found it awkward but just went along with it. Your reaction was always, āUgh, no way.āā
Shields admitted that filming was difficult, revealing that the production team pressured her to develop romantic feelings for her co-star, even though she used a body double for specific scenes.
āThey wanted us to fall in love so badly,ā she recalled. āBut I had never even kissed anyone at that age and didnāt know how to process those emotions.ā
Her reflections echo sentiments shared in her 2023 documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields. In the film, she criticized how her ācoming-of-ageā was marketed, stating, āThe irony was, I wasnāt in touch with my own maturity at all.ā
