It all started unexpectedly: one ordinary morning, as Alex was leaving his house, a dirty dog jumped out from around the corner and barked. The man stepped back ā thinking it was an aggressive stray dog, and without quickening his pace, he tried to walk away hoping it would leave him alone.
But the dog showed up the next day too. And the day after that. And a week later. Every time Alex opened the door ā the dog was nearby. It didnāt come closer, didnāt bark ā it just followed him at a safe distance.
Alex tried everything to get rid of the persistent companion. Outsmart it, trick it, change his route. All in vain. The dog seemed to know his thoughts in advance and still followed him.
Only later did everything fall into place. This dog was not a threat. It felt something. Something Alex himself didnāt realize ā or didnāt want to realize.

Alex was over forty. His life had barely changed since ten years ago when he moved into a small one-room apartment with peeling wallpaper. Only a photo of his daughter on the wall reminded him that things had once been different.
He glanced quickly in the mirror and adjusted his tie. Reflected back was a tired man with dark circles under his eyes ā a typical office clerk, as his ex-wife called him.
The past caused Alex pain. After his wife left, he was completely alone, broken and lost. He missed his daughter terribly. For ten years his soul had been empty, and his days ā repetitive as drops of water.
But this dog, which every morning drove him crazy, seemed to see right through him. As if reading his soul like an open book.
That day Alex didnāt head to the bus stop. He walked toward the old bridge on the edge of town ā where the river was loudest and the railings rusty. He wasnāt planning to come back.
He was exhausted. Ten years of loneliness, emptiness, and guilt. He no longer saw a reason to go on.
But he wasnāt alone.
The dog followed him again. As every day. But this time ā faster, closer, tenser. It seemed to sense something was wrong. And when Alex stood at the edge, the dog rushed forward and at the last moment jumped on him, knocking him down.
He fell, hit himself, lost balance. His heart was pounding. He lay on the cold concrete, and beside him trembled that very dog. It didnāt bark. It just looked straight into his eyes.
Alex slowly got up. And for the first time in many years ā he cried. But not from pain. From being stopped. From someone seeing right through him. And not letting go.
He took the dog in his arms and silently carried it home.
Since then, many things have changed. He started getting up earlier, feeding it, talking to it. Gradually his appetite returned, then ā interest in life. Now he had someone waiting for him at home. Someone who didnāt require words. Just presence.
The neighbors had already gotten used to it: Alex no longer goes to work alone. And there was light in his eyes again.
