On the Edge of Life: how one man lost 330 kg and regained his life

In 2016, Mexican Juan Pedro Franco entered the Guinness as the heaviest living person — weighing 595 kg.

He couldn’t get out of bed, his health declined rapidly, and only then did he realize he had to act. It took immense determination to embark on the journey toward a new self.

According to WHO, Mexico has one of the highest obesity rates — over one-third of adolescents are overweight. It was in that country that this man’s weight was comparable to that of an entire bear family. His story became a symbol of struggle and hope.

His weight issue began in childhood — at six he already weighed 63 kg. In adolescence, an accident worsened the situation. After the crash, his weight exceeded 200 kg and continued to increase.

“My body felt out of control. Diets didn’t help, and eventually I gave up,” he recalled.

By age 32, he had been bedridden for seven years. In addition to obesity, he suffered from diabetes, hypertension, thyroid problems, and fluid in the lungs.

Seeking help proved crucial. A doctor in Guadalajara agreed to operate, but first he had to follow a strict diet and start moving a little.

Thanks to his determination and the support of a medical team, he lost 170 kg before even undergoing stomach reduction surgery.

The surgery was successful. Afterward, he began exercising with special equipment and adhering to a new diet.

A few months later, he had a second operation that reduced his stomach size by another half.

By 2020, with the help of a team of 30 specialists, he had lost a total of 330 kg and the man who couldn’t walk had regained the ability to move on his own.

That year was also a personal trial: first his father died of a heart attack, then, three months later, his mother died due to COVID‑19 complications. He himself also contracted the virus.

Despite the tragedies, he didn’t give up. He firmly believed he had to continue — for himself and in memory of his loved ones.

“I take the bus, I buy regular clothes. I never wanted to be known as the heaviest man. Now I dream of being the one who has lost the most weight,” he said.

Today he continues to exercise, speaks at conferences, and motivates others. He plans surgery to remove excess skin weighing over 80 kg.

Recently he posted a photo with his German Shepherd. The man once carried by eight people from home to clinic now walks alone and has set a new goal — to reach 200 kg.
