Why Do Flight Attendants Sit on Their Hands? The Little-Known Truth ✈️🤲

If you’ve ever stepped onto a commercial airplane, you may have spotted something unusual: flight attendants sitting on their hands during takeoff and landing. At first glance, it seems puzzling. Personally, I found it strange 😕, and throughout the entire flight, one question kept nagging me: why? 🤔 Once I disembarked, curiosity got the better of me, and I asked a crew member about it. The answer caught me off guard! 😲👇

Flight attendants aren’t just there to provide refreshments and ensure passenger comfort; they are extensively trained safety professionals equipped to handle emergencies and safeguard everyone onboard. Among the many procedures they adhere to, one that often catches passengers’ attention is their rigid stance during crucial flight phases.

Henny Lim, a crew member for the Philippines-based airline Cebu Pacific, recently went viral on TikTok after shedding light on this lesser-known safety practice.

In the video, she poses the question, “Ever wonder why the cabin crew assumes this position during takeoff and landing?” She then demonstrates the well-rehearsed “bracing position” while strapped into her jump seat.

During critical flight moments, such as departure and arrival, the likelihood of an incident is heightened. Should an emergency evacuation be required, this stance enables flight attendants to react promptly.

“This position consists of securing the seatbelt tightly, sitting upright, keeping hands tucked beneath the thighs—arms relaxed, thumbs inward—and ensuring feet are planted firmly on the ground,” explains the narrator in the video, which resurfaced online after its initial release in 2022.

Henny and another flight crew member proceed to demonstrate how they strap themselves in, placing their hands beneath their legs to maintain control.

This technique prevents involuntary movements caused by turbulence, abrupt landings, or sudden jolts, which could otherwise hinder their response time.

“The purpose of this posture is to reinforce stability and minimize injury in case of an unexpected crisis.” By restricting body movement, they significantly lower the risk of harm in the event of an impact.

“During this period, flight attendants also conduct a ‘silent review,’ mentally preparing for possible emergency scenarios every time the aircraft takes off and lands.”

The clip opens with a reassuring message: “Safe travels, everyone.”

A seasoned cabin crew member told Reader’s Digest that sitting on their hands isn’t necessarily a formal regulation but rather a matter of individual preference.

“We’re required to position our hands properly as part of the brace stance, and if someone prefers, they may choose to sit on their hands,” explained Erin Thomas, who has over 15 years of aviation experience. “What truly matters is maintaining the brace position.”

Erin personally prefers resting her hands on her lap, as she believes it conveys a composed demeanor. “Passengers pick up on our energy, so if we remain calm during takeoff, they’re likely to feel more at ease too,” she shares.
