When Mark suggested that we spend the weekend outside the city and that I get to know his parents better, I was genuinely happy. I couldn’t even imagine what was waiting for me there… 😳😱
We had already been dating for several months, and I felt that our relationship was becoming more serious.
Throughout the entire journey, he told me how we would relax, grill meat outdoors, and enjoy the peace away from the noise of the city. So when we finally arrived, I expected a completely different kind of welcome.
The moment I stepped through the doorway, I heard:
— Here, take this. The brushes are in the storage room, and you can get water from the yard.
With those words, Mark handed me a bucket so casually, as if he were giving me a gift. At first, I thought it was some kind of awkward joke. But from his calm expression, I quickly realized that he was completely serious.
Before I even had time to respond, his mother appeared. The woman looked me over carefully from head to toe and immediately started giving me tasks.
— First wash the terrace, then take care of the kitchen. There are two more rooms upstairs, and the bathroom also needs a thorough cleaning.
She listed the tasks with such confidence, as if I hadn’t come there as a guest, but according to a contract that had already been agreed upon.
The house smelled of dampness and old wood. Meanwhile, Mark and his father had comfortably settled in front of the television and were completely absorbed in watching the match. It seemed like everything happening around them had nothing to do with them.
I placed my travel bag against the wall and tried to convince myself that nothing terrible had happened. Maybe it was worth helping just once to make a good impression. After all, it was my first meeting with his family.
But at that moment, I still had no idea that the real “surprises” of this visit had only just begun… 😱
Continuation in the first comment.👇
A few more hours passed. By that time, my hands were already aching from the cold water, and the relaxing weekend Mark had described so beautifully was nowhere to be seen.
His mother continued finding new things to criticize, while he never once offered to help or even asked how I was feeling.
When I finished the last room, it was already late. I went downstairs hoping I could at least sit for a while and have a cup of tea. But instead of hearing a thank you, I heard:
— Well, now the house is finally in order. Next time we’ll finish faster.
Those words were the final straw. At that moment, I suddenly saw my possible future clearly. Today they expected me to clean the entire house, tomorrow there would be other responsibilities, and I would never receive respect or care.
I calmly went upstairs, packed my things, and came back down. Mark looked at the bag in my hands with surprise.
— Where are you going?
— Home, — I replied. — I came here as a guest, not to work as a free maid.
He tried to argue, insisting that I had misunderstood everything and that his family was simply used to this kind of arrangement. But that was exactly what helped me make my final decision.
If this kind of treatment was normal for them, then it meant we had completely different views on life.
I thanked them for their hospitality, called a taxi, and left. Already on the way home, I felt surprisingly relieved.
Sometimes one single day is enough to understand a person better than after many months of a relationship. And that realization turned out to be far more valuable than any beautiful promises.
