“These skates belong in a museum, not in a competition,” one of the figure skaters sneered when she noticed the girl’s old, worn-out skates. A few minutes later, she was no longer laughing: after one jump, she stared at her rival, unable to believe her eyes… ⛸️😨
Before the competition began, the participants waited for their turn by the boards. Among the expensive costumes and brand-new, snow-white skates, seventeen-year-old Emma stood out the most. She wore a simple lilac dress, and her skates looked as though they were already many years old.
Two figure skaters standing nearby noticed them immediately.
— Just look at her skates, one of them whispered.
— Seriously? She’s going to compete in those?
The girls laughed. Emma heard everything, but she didn’t even turn her head. She simply bent down and checked her laces one more time.
— Those skates belong in a museum, the skater in the red dress added. — I’d be embarrassed to step onto the ice in those.
Emma slowly stood up.
— What matters isn’t how they look, she replied calmly.
— Of course, her rival sneered. — What matters is not falling.
At that moment, Emma’s name was announced. She stepped onto the ice as polite applause came from the stands.
The first few seconds of her program seemed simple. A few smooth movements, a quick acceleration, a spin. The girl in the red dress was already smiling, as if everything was obvious.
But then Emma suddenly picked up speed.
Her coach by the boards stopped moving. He knew what she was about to do. Emma had spent months hesitating before attempting that jump in a competition.
She pushed off the ice and soared into the air.
When her skates touched the ice again, the entire arena fell silent for a second. The girl in the red dress went pale and whispered:
— It can’t be… Did she really just do that?
But the real surprise came a few seconds later, when the judges saw exactly what had happened during the jump… 😨

Emma landed cleanly and continued her program as if nothing unusual had happened. But a commotion had already begun in the stands. Even the other figure skaters by the boards were looking at her completely differently now.
When the music ended, Emma stopped in the center of the rink. For a few seconds, there was silence, and then the entire arena erupted in applause.
But the most interesting moment came when a replay of her jump appeared on the screen.
The judges watched the recording several times. Emma had not only performed an extremely difficult element — she had done it perfectly. That particular jump was something many of the tournament participants didn’t even include in their programs.
— Now I understand why she was so calm, one of the girls said quietly.
The skater in the red dress was no longer smiling.
Then the scores appeared.
Emma took first place.
When she returned to the boards, her rival looked at her old skates and awkwardly looked away.
— Listen… I’m sorry for what I said.
Emma smiled.
— It’s okay. They really are old.
She was about to walk away when the girl suddenly asked:
— Then why don’t you replace them?
Emma looked at her worn-out skates.
— They belonged to my older sister. She was the one who taught me how to skate. After an injury, she could no longer return to the ice and gave them to me. I promised her that one day I would win an important competition wearing these very skates.
Hearing this, the girl in the red dress lowered her eyes.
A few minutes later, the final results were announced. Emma had truly become the winner.
At the awards ceremony, she stood there with the medal around her neck, wearing the very same old skates everyone had laughed at only moments earlier.
When the participants gathered for a group photo, the girl in the red dress approached Emma on her own and stood beside her.
— You know, she said quietly, — I was wrong. They don’t belong in a museum.
Emma looked at her.
— Then where do they belong?
She smiled:
— On the podium.
