Every morning at exactly 6:30, Emma went out into the yard with a garden hose in her hands. She walked past the withering garden beds, ignoring the tomatoes, herbs, and berries that had been needing water for a long time. But one area near the old fence never went without attention.
She slowly watered that exact spot every day. The soil there was always dark, loose, and damp, but after several months not a single sprout had appeared. Instead of plants, flies and beetles began gathering around the area, and a strange, heavy smell grew stronger and stronger.
At first, I thought Emma had planted something unusual. But weeks passed, and the empty patch remained exactly the same. The longer I watched her, the stronger my feeling became that she wasn’t growing plants there… but that she was hiding something.
We had lived next to each other for almost twenty years. In the past, Emma had been a quiet, reserved woman. Everything changed after the disappearance of her husband Michael.
She told everyone the same story:
— We had an argument. He got angry, packed his things, and left.
— But why didn’t he contact you? — the neighbors asked.
Emma simply shrugged.

First she talked about potatoes, then about dry soil, and suddenly claimed that Michael himself had asked her to take care of that place.

She hoped that over time, thick grass would quickly grow in the damp soil, completely hiding the traces of the burial and preventing anyone from becoming suspicious.
But the opposite happened. The constant moisture attracted insects, a strong odor appeared, and the owner’s strange behavior only increased the neighbors’ suspicions.
