After moving into the new house, my eyes immediately caught a strange object on the neighboring roof. 😏 At first, it seemed like an unfinished terrace or just an unfortunate architectural idea. But after getting to know the owners, I couldn’t resist asking directly what it was.
What I heard in response honestly surprised me. 😲 This structure turned out to be nothing like it seemed — its true purpose was unexpected and very practical.

Until the very end, I was convinced it was a failed balcony or maybe a decorative element.
But, as it turned out, it’s not a balcony at all, but a rescue platform from which firefighters can quickly evacuate you using a fire truck ladder in case of a fire.
The neighbors explained that such structures are especially common in countries with dense urban development, where standard evacuation routes may be inaccessible.
This small metal platform extending beyond the roof serves as a point from which firefighters can easily reach residents with the help of an aerial ladder or lift.
What’s particularly striking is that despite its simplicity, this solution can save many lives.
After all, in case of fire or heavy smoke, descending internal stairs can be impossible, especially for the elderly or children.
And this external access point gives a real chance to get out safely.
After this conversation, I started seriously thinking about the safety of my own house.
Now I also have a similar platform installed on my roof, and I absolutely don’t regret it! It’s not just metal and bolts — it’s a real lifesaving opportunity in a critical situation.
Before, I would never have thought about it, but now I advise anyone who has a house with an attic or loft to consider installing such a structure. This small change could one day save a life.
