On the first night after my husband returned home, having lived away from home for three years, I noticed something strange about him. Something like this had never happened between us before. And what happened that night frightened me and soon completely turned our lives upside down… 😨
For three years, my husband Daniel had been working in another city. He rarely came home — sometimes for a weekend, sometimes for just one day. Of course, during that time we had grown apart, but I was sure that after his return, everything would become the way it used to be.
I was wrong.
That evening, we talked for a long time. Daniel told me about his work and asked what had changed at home. From the outside, everything seemed normal, but I couldn’t shake the strange feeling I had. It was as if he had returned to a home he remembered well, but one he hadn’t lived in for a long time.
During the night, I woke up because of his touch.
Daniel was sleeping beside me and holding me tightly around the waist.
That was when I became suspicious.
In our ten years of marriage, he had never slept like that. Daniel always slept on his back and didn’t even like being hugged in his sleep.
I carefully removed his arm.
A few minutes later, he hugged me again. Completely naturally, as if he did it every night.
In the morning, I tried to make a joke about it:
— In three years, you’ve picked up a new habit.
Daniel froze.
— What habit?
— You held me all night. You used to hate that.
I expected him to laugh.
But my husband looked at me in such a way that the smile immediately disappeared from my face.
— Daniel, what happened?
He sat on the edge of the bed and was silent for a few seconds.
Then he asked:
— Didn’t you notice anything else during the night?
Those words made me uneasy.
— What was I supposed to notice?
Daniel suddenly turned toward me.
And after his next words, a shiver ran through me. I realized that during those three years, something much more frightening had happened to my husband than simply developing a new habit… 😨

— What was I supposed to notice? — I asked.
Daniel was silent for a long time, then quietly said:
— Maybe I called you by another name during the night.
I felt everything inside me tighten.
— What name?
He looked away.
— Sofia.
I said nothing. I knew that name. Sofia worked with Daniel in the city where he had spent the last three years. He had mentioned her several times in our conversations, but he had always talked only about work.
— Were you in a relationship?
Daniel got out of bed and walked over to the window.
— It’s over. That’s why I came back.
Those words hurt more than the confession itself.
So he hadn’t come back because the project was over and he had missed me. He had come back because his relationship with another woman had ended.
— How long?
— Almost two years.
I sat down on the bed.
Two years. While I was waiting for him at home, he was living another life.
But then Daniel said something I had never expected:
— There’s something else. Sofia is pregnant.
I couldn’t say anything.
— She claims the baby is mine — he continued. — But I’m not sure. We argued about it. That’s why I left.
That was why he had been acting so strangely. That was where the habit of embracing a woman in his sleep had come from. For two years, he had simply become accustomed to falling asleep beside someone else.
I silently got up and left the bedroom.
— Where are you going?
— I need to be alone.
But an hour later, something happened that completely destroyed any hope of saving our marriage.
Daniel’s phone was lying on the kitchen table. A message appeared on the screen:
“Did you tell her about the baby? We need to decide when you’re going to come and get your things.”
I looked at my husband.
— You said it was over.
He went pale.
I opened the door and asked him to leave.
Over the next few days, Daniel called me, asked me to give him time, and kept repeating that he was confused. But I already understood the most important thing: the problem wasn’t Sofia, and it wasn’t even the baby.
The problem was that for two years, my husband had come home, looked me in the eyes, and lied to me.
A few weeks later, I filed for divorce.
Later, it turned out that the baby really was Daniel’s. He stayed with Sofia, while for the first time in three years, I stopped waiting for a man who had long since stopped being my husband.
Sometimes everything begins with a very small detail.
In my case, it was a hand that instinctively wrapped around my waist during the night.
Except that habit wasn’t something he had learned with me.
