During my visit to my mother-in-law, my husband secretly launched into a full-scale kitchen makeover. The moment I stepped inside, I was speechless—the transformation was beyond my wildest expectations!
Our kitchen was outdated and barely functional, so my husband documented the entire process to show just how much work went into it. The first step? Stripping away everything old and unnecessary. The sink and gas stove remained operational, ensuring meals could still be prepared during the renovation. Thankfully, a plastic window had already been installed beforehand, making things a bit easier.
Being a plumber, my husband saw this as the perfect chance to upgrade our entire heating system. This proactive approach saved us the trouble of future repairs, and since he used his own tools, we only had to cover the cost of materials—saving us a significant amount of money.
One major issue was the ventilation. The original vent was positioned too low, so he relocated it higher up for better efficiency. After installing stretch ceilings, he meticulously aligned the hood’s ventilation system, giving it a sleek, modern look.
To create a seamless design, the gas meter was tucked away behind the refrigerator but remained easily accessible. Where a bathroom door once stood, he built a plasterboard wall, which not only leveled the surface but also made tiling much simpler and more cost-effective.
Knowing my passion for green hues, he carefully selected a fresh and lively color scheme. Now, when sunlight pours through the window, the space feels bright and welcoming. Heavy curtains were swapped for sleek blinds, freeing up the windowsill for extra storage or decorative elements.
For added safety, he insulated the gas pipe with a heat-resistant material typically used for water pipes. Though not essential, this precaution ensures the pipe remains protected in case of accidental movement from the refrigerator.
To improve functionality, he installed radiator valves, allowing for easy heat control. The microwave, originally placed on the windowsill, was relocated to a sturdy wall-mounted bracket for a safer and more ergonomic setup.
The custom kitchen set cost approximately $750, including complimentary measurement and assembly. Despite the compact space, every centimeter was utilized efficiently. Even the tightest gap between the sink and stove—just 5 cm—was designed with comfort in mind.
To enhance the ambiance, he installed under-cabinet LED lighting using an LED strip and diffuser. He secured it with double-sided tape and placed a discreet switch between the hood and gas meter, creating an elegant and budget-friendly lighting solution.
The stretch ceiling also concealed unsightly pipes, which had to be repositioned for a more streamlined design. The next step? Adding a hanging rail with hooks and extra shelves for improved organization.
