My father told me that such weights were widely used in trade and household activities in the past. For example, at markets, sellers could quickly determine the weight of goods without conventional scales.
By simply hanging the weight on one end of a rope and the item on the other, they could relatively accurately determine its weight. The heavier the weight, the more it could balance.
