“Mom, please don’t come to school anymore… They make fun of me because of you,” Daniel said, not knowing that just a few days later, he and his classmates would be standing in front of Maria, unable to raise their eyes. 😧😵
It was early morning. The city was just beginning to wake up. The first cars were driving through the streets, passersby were hurrying to their destinations, and parents were taking their children to school.
Maria had already been working for several hours. As she did every day, she had started her shift long before dawn.
Her son Daniel stood in front of her. A backpack hung over his shoulders, and his eyes were fixed on the ground. He did not look angry, but rather confused and embarrassed.
— Mom, please don’t come to school events anymore…
Upon hearing these words, Maria froze for a few seconds. She tightened her grip on the broom and stared into the distance, as if trying to process what she had just heard.
— What do you mean, not come anymore? she asked softly.
The boy let out a heavy sigh.
— It would just be better if you didn’t come.
— Why?
After a brief pause, he finally answered:
— Yesterday, my classmates saw us together after school. Then they started joking about it…
Maria understood everything even before her son finished speaking.
— Because of my uniform?
Daniel nodded silently.
— And because of my job?
— Yes…
The woman lowered her gaze to her work jacket. It was this very uniform that had helped her pay the bills, buy clothes and schoolbooks for her son, and put food on the table for many years. She had never been ashamed of her work and had never considered it something unworthy.
— Are you ashamed of me? she asked calmly.
At that moment, the woman’s heart tightened painfully. She realized that her son had reached an age when the opinions of peers sometimes seem more important than fairness and common sense.
And for the first time in many years, tears welled up in her eyes. Not because someone mocked her profession, but because the son for whom she had worked her entire life had, even if only for a moment, looked at the world through the eyes of those who are used to laughing at other people’s work.
But a few days later, something happened that made Daniel and his classmates stand before Maria with their heads bowed. 😧😵
Continuation in the first comment.👇👇
A few days passed.
Maria kept her promise and did not attend the school event. That day, Daniel felt relieved, thinking he would finally avoid being mocked. But something completely different happened.
During the celebration, the school principal invited several people onto the stage whose work helps others every single day. Maria was among them. She had not known about it in advance. The school administration had decided to recognize her many years of hard work and responsibility.
Photos of people from different professions appeared on the large screen. The teachers spoke about how it is not a title or expensive clothing that deserves respect, but honest work and caring for others.
When a photograph of his mother in her work uniform appeared on the screen, the audience suddenly burst into applause.
Daniel felt everything inside him turn upside down. The very boys who had been joking only days before now sat in silence. Some of them even looked toward the stage with genuine respect.
After the event, he hesitated for a long time before going home.
Maria greeted him, as always, with a warm smile and asked how his day had been.
But instead of answering, the boy lowered his eyes.
— I’m sorry, Mom, he said quietly. — I was wrong.
The woman said nothing. She simply embraced her son.
At that moment, Daniel understood something important: one should not be ashamed of honest work, but of injustice and cruelty toward others. People who work every day for the sake of their loved ones deserve gratitude, not mockery.
And he remembered that lesson far better than any school subject.
