Rex was by his side in seconds — he looked up at Max with worried eyes and whimpered softly. Max, wincing, tried to joke through the pain:

Three kilometers would be nothing for a healthy person, but with a leg like this — it was torture. Max tried to crawl, but barely moved a few meters.

The dog seemed to understand. He sniffed the air, looked back a couple of times, and bolted down the path, barking loudly.
Max lay there, counting the minutes. Nearly an hour passed. The forest grew darker. He was beginning to fear the worst, when he suddenly heard footsteps. Then — a familiar bark.
Rex had returned. But he wasn’t alone. Two local fishermen had followed him after hearing his bark and noticing the dog tugging at their pants.
They gently lifted Max, made a makeshift splint from branches, and called for help.
Two hours later, he was in the hospital. A fracture — but no displacement. He’d be fine.
The next day, Max posted a picture of Rex on social media with the caption:
