Rare things often have an interesting story, but in the case of the unique Enigma (mystery) diamond, the very absence of a story was the highlight.
No one in the world knows where this stone came from, but it is likely that it came from space.
“Mystery” in all its splendor
Formally, it is a diamond of the “carbonado” category, with a high concentration of carbon, but the purity of the “Riddle” surprises even venerable jewelers.
Ordinary carbonados are opaque and ugly, so although the Riddle is six times smaller than the legendary Sergio, it looks completely different. Simply put, amazing beauty, especially after cutting.
The Riddle is believed to have come from outer space and formed from diamond dust during a supernova explosion around 2.6 billion years ago.
This is indicated by the presence of the mineral osbornite, which is not found on Earth.
Additionally, checks of similar small diamonds have revealed a number of anomalies, indicating an extraterrestrial origin.
The previous owner wanted to remain incognito, so we only know that the stone resurfaced three years ago, when it was donated for preparation before sale.
Jewelers cut the diamond into 55 facets, giving it a weight of 555.55 carats. In this form, “The Riddle” went to Sotheby’s, where it was sold the other day for the equivalent of $4.3 million.
