The bicycle wheel struck a sharp stone with a loud crack, and the bundle of firewood on the rack swayed dangerously over the reddish ground. Twelve-year-old Daniel Reyes tightened his grip on the handlebars and kept going, his worn sneakers scraping along the rough road outside the town.
A little way behind, a black SUV moved slowly forward, looking out of place among crooked fences and sun-bleached sheds.
Behind the tinted window sat Charles Whitmore, founder of a large construction company in nearby Savannah. In this neglected neighborhood, his strict gray suit and polished shoes looked almost ridiculous. He had left the office early because one thought had been haunting him for weeks.
Every weekday at exactly 5:10 p.m., Daniel stood by the iron gates of the gated community where his mother worked as a housekeeper. He didn’t play on his phone or talk with friends — he simply waited, calm and silent, with a backpack over his shoulder.
But today, everything was different.
Instead of waiting by the entrance, the boy turned down a side street, his bicycle loaded with neatly chopped firewood.
Almost without thinking, Charles followed him.
When Daniel headed toward an old lumber warehouse on the outskirts, Charles stopped and stepped out of the car. The air carried a sharp smell of sawdust and gasoline.
— You should be in school right now, — he said calmly, without harshness.
Daniel tensed but did not run.
— I am studying… it’s just that today I had to help.
— Who made you carry that? — Charles asked, looking at the heavy load.
A man in a baseball cap stepped out of the warehouse, brushing dust off his hands.
— He came looking for work himself. I pay well.
Charles clenched his jaw.
— He’s twelve.
— He said he needed money. I didn’t force him.
Without another word, Charles pulled several bills from his wallet and handed them over.
— He won’t be working here anymore. That’s final.
The man muttered in annoyance but took the money.
Charles turned to the boy:
— Get in. I’ll drive you home.
Daniel hesitated for only a second, then nodded and got into the car.

When the car stopped in front of an old house on the outskirts, Charles expected to see ordinary poverty. But what opened before his eyes made him freeze.

— That’s my mom, — Daniel said quietly. — She hasn’t been able to work for a month. I just… try to make sure we have enough for food and medicine.
The words sounded calm, without complaint, and that made them strike even harder.
Charles suddenly remembered how he had scolded the accounting department over the housekeeper’s lateness and had even considered firing her. Now everything made sense.
He exhaled slowly and said:
— Tomorrow your mother will return to work… but not as a housekeeper. I’ll arrange paid leave for her and help with her treatment. And you won’t have to work anymore.
That evening, Charles drove away a different man.
And a month later, a new support fund for employees’ families appeared in his company — the first, but far from the last.
