“These are your duties for the entire vacation,” my mother-in-law said, handing me a list of chores as if I had come to the seaside not to relax, but to serve her. My husband asked me to simply put up with it, but my patience ran out, and that night I prepared such a surprise for my mother-in-law that the next morning she stormed into my room screaming… 😨
My husband and I have three small children, so I had long ago stopped dreaming of a normal vacation. But one day my husband Nathan told me that he had booked a week by the sea. I was thrilled — especially because I had never seen the ocean before.
Then he added:
— By the way, Mom is coming too.
It turned out that his mother, Helen, had asked to come with us, and Nathan, as usual, had been unable to say no to her.
Our relationship was complicated. Helen was constantly teaching me how to cook her son’s favorite dishes, raise the children, and even fold his shirts properly. But for the sake of peace in the family, I usually stayed silent.
On the first day, we went down to the beach. I had barely sat down when Helen handed me a sheet of paper.
At the top it said: “Your duties during the vacation.”
At 6:30, I was supposed to dress the children; at 7:00, bring coffee to her and Nathan; then organize breakfast, watch the children near the water, and put them to bed. And so on until evening.
— Are you serious? I asked.
Helen smiled.
— Nathan and I work and deserve to rest. You, on the other hand, stay home all year, so you can take care of us.
I felt everything boiling inside me. To her, having three small children meant that I simply “stayed at home.”
I showed the list to Nathan, hoping that at least this time he would intervene.
But he only sighed:
— Don’t pay attention to it. Do what you can, and that’s it.
At that moment, my patience was gone.
That evening, when everyone went out to dinner, I went down to the hotel reception and asked them to change a few things about our reservation.
The next morning, for the first time in a long while, I was calmly drinking my coffee when the room door suddenly flew open.
Helen was standing in the doorway.
— Have you lost your mind?! How dare you do this?!
I looked at her and calmly replied:
— You were the one who said that everyone should get the vacation they deserved.
And when Nathan found out what I had done the night before, he finally understood: this time, he really would have to choose between me and his mother… 😱

And when Nathan found out exactly what I had changed the night before, he finally understood: this time, he really would have to choose between me and his mother…
I asked the reception to separate our reservation. I paid for Helen’s room only until the following morning and booked another room for myself and the children for the remaining days. Nathan could decide for himself who he wanted to spend the vacation with.
— You want to throw my mother out?! he protested.
— No. I simply refuse to keep paying for her vacation while also being her servant. If she wants to stay, she can pay for the room herself.
Helen almost choked with anger.
— I came here to spend my vacation with my son!
— Then spend it with him. I came here to spend my vacation with my children.
She turned to Nathan:
— You’re going to let your wife speak to me like that?
I looked at my husband too.
For several seconds, he remained silent. In the past, I already knew how that silence would end: he would ask me to give in.
But this time Nathan took that very list from his mother’s hands, tore it in half, and said:
— Mom, you ruined everything yourself. We invited you to spend the vacation with us, and you decided to boss my wife around.
Helen was furious. She declared that she would go home if her son didn’t force me to apologize.
Nathan didn’t force me.
A few hours later, she actually packed her things and left.
That evening, however, something happened that I had not expected at all. Nathan took the children to dinner and then came back with food for me.
— You’re doing nothing today, he said. — I’ll put the children to bed myself. And… I’m sorry. I should have stopped Mom yesterday.
For the first time in a long while, the remaining days truly became a vacation. I swam with the children, lay on the beach, and drank my morning coffee while Nathan took care of breakfast.
I kept that list.
Not out of anger.
Simply because sometimes a single sheet of paper helps a person understand something they have refused to see for far too long: if you constantly stay silent to keep peace in the family, sooner or later someone will believe they have the right to boss you around.
