“CHECK THE TRASH BIN,” — the delivery driver wrote on a piece of cardboard and held it up to the camera while our nanny was at home with my little son. I didn’t understand why he was doing it, but when I opened the bin and saw what the nanny had been trying to hide from me, my hands began to tremble… 😨
Megan had been working for us as a nanny since the autumn. During all that time, I had almost nothing to complain about. She always arrived on time, sent me photos of my son during lunch and walks, and by the time I returned home, it was often even cleaner than it had been in the morning.
My son was also happy whenever he saw her.
I was convinced that we had been incredibly lucky with our nanny.
But through the camera at the front door, I had noticed the same delivery driver several times. He would bring packages, then sometimes look directly into the camera and say something.
There was no sound — the microphone had been broken for a long time. So I didn’t pay any attention to it.
Last Thursday, everything changed.
Megan was at home with my son when the same delivery driver brought two boxes. He placed them by the door, took a few steps, but suddenly stopped.
Then he came back, tore off a piece of cardboard from the box and wrote something on it with a marker.
“CHECK THE TRASH BIN.”
For several seconds, I simply stared at my phone screen.
Then I went out through the back door and walked over to the bins near the garage.
One of the lids wasn’t completely closed.
I lifted it.
There was ordinary trash on top. But underneath a bag, I saw several empty packages of baby food that I had never bought for my son.
And next to them was something else.
A small unlabeled bottle and a used syringe.
I felt all the warmth leave my body.
At that moment, the door behind me opened.
— What are you doing there? — I heard Megan’s voice.
I turned around.
She wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at the bottle in my hand.
And from her expression, I immediately understood: the delivery driver hadn’t warned me for no reason… 😱

Megan turned pale.
— It’s not what you think, — she said quickly.
— Then explain it.
She tried to take the bottle from my hand, but I stepped back.
At that moment, my son started crying. I immediately went to him, picked him up and told Megan to leave. She began arguing, but I told her I was already calling the police.
A few minutes later, she gathered her things and left.
I called my husband and then our pediatrician. The doctor asked me not to throw anything away and to bring the child in for an examination.
Fortunately, my son was fine.
Later, it turned out that the bottle contained an ordinary medication used in cases of severe allergic reactions. But no one had ever prescribed that medication to our son.
Then I found the delivery driver.
He told me that he had already seen Megan several times near the trash bins. Once, he saw her throw away an almost full package of expensive infant formula and then take another one out of her car.
After that, he started paying attention.
It turned out that Megan was taking home the infant formula and baby food that we bought, while giving our son cheap products instead. But the worst thing had happened a few days earlier.
The child had developed a rash. Instead of calling me or a doctor, Megan had given him the medication from that same bottle on her own.
Then she got scared and threw away the packages, syringe and bottle, hoping that I would never find out.
When I asked her why she had done it, Megan replied:
— I was afraid you would think I wasn’t taking proper care of him and fire me.
And that was exactly what I did.
I handed all the camera recordings and the items I had found over to the police. Megan never returned to our home.
But one question kept bothering me: why had the delivery driver tried for so long to tell me something through the camera?
At the next delivery, I waited for him by the door.
— Why did you warn me?
He was silent for a moment.
— I have a young son too. I saw your nanny throwing away baby supplies and medications several times. I didn’t know what was happening, but I realized that you needed to see it with your own eyes.
I thanked him.
That same day, we finally replaced the broken microphone on the camera.
And I didn’t throw away that piece of cardboard.
Because sometimes four words from a complete stranger can make you see what was happening right inside your own home.
