The family sold her to a man who lived in the mountains, a man about whom people in the village spoke only in whispers, because she was “lame”… A year later her parents decided to find out how their daughter was living, and they were stunned when they opened the door of the cabin. 😲😵
The old wooden wagon creaked heavily over every stone of the narrow mountain road. The wheels bounced dangerously over the bumps, and it seemed as if the wagon might at any moment plunge into the dark abyss at the edge of the trail. Inside sat a girl named Elsie.
She had clasped her fingers tightly on her knees, so tightly that her knuckles had turned white from tension and cold.
In her mind, the cruel words of her uncle Curtis echoed again and again:
— A lame girl is of no use to anyone. Let her at least bring some benefit.
And that is exactly what happened. For a few silver coins they simply sold her. Like an unwanted sack of grain thrown out of a warehouse.
Now she was to live in the mountains, far from people, with a man about whom people in the village spoke only in whispers.
When the road began descending into a deep valley surrounded by tall pines, Elsie felt a strange sensation, as if she were leaving her former world behind. The cold wind whistled through the trees, and the air grew sharper and heavier.
Suddenly the silence was cut by a dry, rhythmic sound — someone was chopping wood. The axe struck the trunk again and again.
The driver pulled the reins and stopped the wagon. Without even looking at the girl, he said briefly:
— We’ve arrived. From now on, this is your life, miss.
Elsie slowly climbed down. Every movement came with difficulty. She pressed the old woolen shawl tighter to her chest, trying to protect herself from the icy wind.
Her right leg, injured many years earlier and never fully healed, trembled painfully when she stepped onto the frozen ground.
She was used to people’s looks. Those looks — a mixture of pity and hidden disgust — when they saw how she slightly dragged her leg while walking.
But the man who lowered the axe and turned toward her looked at her completely differently.
Jonas was enormous. Tall, broad-shouldered, as if he had grown out of these harsh mountains themselves. His thick beard looked a bit unkempt, and his heavy coat was covered with pine needles and wood shavings.
Yet what struck the most were his eyes — calm, attentive, deep.
He did not look at her injured leg. He looked at her face. At the fatigue, the paleness, the quiet тревогу in her gaze… as if trying to see whether a spark of life still remained inside her.
After a moment he simply nodded and calmly said:
— Come into the house. You look completely frozen.
Without mockery. Without pity.
Inside the cabin there was the smell of wood smoke and cedar. The interior was very simple — no decorations, no luxuries. But everything was neat and clean.
Jonas placed a metal mug with hot coffee in front of her and pushed a plate with thick stew toward her.
He did not make long welcoming speeches. But there was not a drop of roughness in his behavior.
Yet Elsie’s heart beat so fast, like a bird trapped in a cage.
All her life she had been made to believe that she was nothing but a burden. And now she felt a strange need to justify herself.
She said quietly, almost in a whisper:
— I can work… I know how to clean, cook, mend clothes… Sometimes my leg gets in the way, but I try… I just don’t want you to think that I’m useless.
Jonas stopped. He slowly turned toward her and looked at her carefully.
Then, in a surprisingly gentle voice, he said:
— I don’t think that.
He was silent for a moment and then added:
— Don’t let other people’s words settle inside you. When they sink too deep… it becomes very hard to get rid of them later.
Elsie froze.
No one had spoken to her with such respect for many years.
That night she lay in a small attic under the wooden roof. Outside, the rain fell quietly, and the drops softly tapped against the window.
She cried, but for the first time in a long time these were not tears of hopelessness…
😲😨A year later her parents decided to find out how their daughter was living, and they were stunned when they opened the door of the cabin…
Continuation of the story in the first comment. 👇
A year passed. One day her relatives decided to find out how the girl they had so easily gotten rid of was living. In the village there were rumors that the hermit from the mountains had begun earning good money from timber, and this stirred their curiosity.
When the wagon stopped at the cabin, Uncle Curtis flung the door open without knocking — and froze.
Inside everything looked different. The house was warm and tidy, fresh bread lay on the table, and a fire burned in the fireplace.
And by the window stood Elsie.
She still limped slightly, but she stood straight and calm. In her eyes there was no longer fear or shame — only quiet confidence.
— Elsie… — Curtis said confusedly. — We decided to see how you live here. After all, we are family.
At that moment Jonas appeared beside her. He silently stood next to the girl, and one calm glance from him was enough to make the room fall silent.
Elsie looked at her relatives for a long time and carefully.
— A family does not sell a person for a few coins, — she said quietly.
No one found anything to answer.
A minute later they awkwardly left the house.
When the door closed, Elsie took a deep breath and looked at the mountains beyond the window.
Once they had sent her here thinking they were getting rid of a burden.
But it was here that she met for the first time a person who saw in her not a weakness… but a true value.
