Every evening, she would appear: a little girl, no older than five, standing still at the window, waving at me.
The whole situation made me uneasy. Who could she be? What was she trying to tell me?
One evening, while sitting with my wife in the living room, I mentioned it again. āThereās that little girl I told you about, at the window,ā I said. Sandy closed her book, came closer, and asked, āYou mean the one who always waves at you?ā
I nodded, feeling a pang in my heart. āYes, but thereās something in her eyes⦠as if sheās asking for help, as if she urgently needs to talk.ā
The next day, I decided to knock on the neighborsā door to learn more.
An elderly woman opened after a moment, looking visibly exhausted.
āHello, I live right across, and Iāve noticed your little girl. Sheās often at the window, waving at me. I just wanted to make sure everything is okay.ā
She seemed hesitant, almost nervous. Then she replied:
āSheās my granddaughter. Her parents recently passed away, so she lives with me now. She doesnāt know anyone here yet; sheās very isolated. Iāll tell her to stop if it bothers you.ā
āNo, not at all. She doesnāt bother me. Iām sorry for your loss,ā I replied sincerely.
Since then, I wave back at her every day. Itās become our little ritual. I hope she will feel better with time.
