After his mother’s death, the six-year-old son of a wealthy sheikh had not spoken a single word for two years, and even the best doctors could not help him. But one day, an ordinary waitress handed the boy a green pencil and accomplished what no doctor had been able to do… 😢
Sheikh Omar Al-Rashid owned several major companies and lived in a huge mansion in Dubai. He had everything other people could only dream of. But no amount of money could bring his six-year-old son Adam’s voice back.
Two years earlier, the boy had lost his mother. From that day on, he stopped speaking. He understood everything people said to him, but even when his father asked him questions, he responded only with a nod.
One day, Omar decided to take his son to a small café away from the busy city center. He hoped a change of scenery might cheer the child up, even a little.
A young waitress named Sofia approached their table.
“Good afternoon! What can I get for you?”
Omar ordered coffee and breakfast for his son.
Sofia noticed that the boy kept staring out the window and would not even touch the toy car in front of him.
“Do you like drawing?” she asked, crouching beside him.
Adam did not answer.
“I’m sorry,” Omar said quietly. “My son doesn’t speak.”
Sofia did not ask any more questions. She brought over a sheet of paper and a box of colored pencils.
“Then let’s just draw something together.”
The boy stared at the pencils for a long time but did not pick one up.
Sofia chose a green pencil and placed it in front of him.
“You know, my mom always used to say that green is the color you can use to draw your happiest memory.”
Adam suddenly raised his head.
Slowly, he picked up the pencil and began to draw. First, a tree, then a little house, and beside it, a woman wearing a long dress.
Omar froze. He recognized the drawing. Exactly the same kind of tree had grown in the yard of the house where his late wife used to spend summers with their son.
But then Adam drew another person beside the woman and suddenly gripped the pencil tightly.
“Who is that, sweetheart?” Sofia asked gently.
The boy looked at her. His lips began to tremble.
And for the first time in two years, he whispered:
“Mom…”
Omar jumped to his feet. He could hardly believe his ears.
But the joy lasted only a few seconds.
Adam pointed at the second person in the drawing, pressed himself against the frightened waitress, and spoke three more words.
When the sheikh heard them, his face turned pale. He finally understood that his son had remained silent all those years for a completely different reason than the one the doctors had given him…

“Uncle pushed Mommy…”
Omar felt his hands turn ice-cold.
“What did you say, son?”
Adam glanced fearfully toward the café door and fell silent again. He pressed himself against Sofia, clutching the green pencil tightly.
“Please don’t rush him,” the young woman said softly. “He’s frightened right now.”
Omar slowly sat back down. For two years, he had been told that his wife had died in an accident. Leila had fallen down the stairs at their country house while he was away on a business trip.
That day, only his younger brother Karim had been near her. He had also been the first to call an ambulance.
Omar looked at his son’s drawing.
“Adam, is that Uncle Karim?”
The boy nodded.
“He was shouting at Mommy,” he whispered. “Mommy said she would tell Daddy everything. And then he pushed her…”
Sofia gently wrapped her arms around the child.
“You’re very brave, Adam. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
Suddenly, the boy burst into tears.
“He said that if I told Daddy, Daddy would die too!”
Omar covered his face with his hands. Now he understood why his son had been afraid to utter a single word for two whole years.
All that time, Karim had continued living close to them. He attended family dinners, bought Adam expensive toys, and pretended to care about his nephew.
Yet every time, the child would hide behind his father.
Omar had believed that his son was simply struggling to cope with his mother’s death.
“Oh, God, Adam…” he whispered. “Why didn’t I understand?”
Sofia looked at the sheikh.
“Right now, he needs to know just one thing: that you believe him and that you will protect him.”
Omar moved closer to his son and gently took his hand.
“Listen to me, sweetheart. No one will ever hurt you again. I’m here. And you were never to blame for what happened to Mommy.”
For the first time in two years, Adam hugged his father on his own.
That same day, Omar contacted the police. He told the investigators what his son had said and handed over the drawing.
At his request, the old case was reopened. It turned out that after Leila’s death, investigators had never received the surveillance footage from the country house. Karim had claimed at the time that the security system was malfunctioning.
However, a former security employee confirmed that shortly before the tragedy, Karim had ordered him to switch off the cameras near the staircase.
Later, investigators also uncovered the reason for the argument.
Leila had discovered that Karim had been transferring money from the family company into accounts belonging to shell companies for several years. She had planned to tell her husband everything.
When Karim was summoned for questioning, he initially denied everything. But after the financial records were examined and witnesses were interviewed, he was arrested.
Omar did not try to take justice into his own hands. He wanted his brother to face the consequences of his actions under the law.
What hurt him most was something else: realizing that for two years, he had allowed his son to remain close to the very person the boy feared most.
A few weeks later, Omar returned to that same café with Adam.
Sofia was surprised to see them.
“Adam! I’m so happy to see you!”
The boy smiled and handed her a small drawing. It showed three people: a father, a boy, and a young woman holding a green pencil.
“This is for you,” he said.
Sofia’s lips began to tremble.
“How beautiful! Thank you, sweetheart.”
Omar placed an envelope on the table.
“I want to thank you. Name any amount you wish.”
But Sofia shook her head.
“There’s no need. I simply talked to your son.”
“You did much more than that,” Omar replied. “You helped him stop being afraid.”
Sofia smiled at Adam.
“You know, I’m studying to become a child psychologist. Sometimes it’s easier for children to draw what they cannot yet put into words.”
Omar thought for a moment and then offered to pay for the rest of her education. This time, Sofia accepted.
Adam gradually returned to his normal life. He began working with a child psychologist, started laughing and playing again, and asked his father hundreds of questions.
One evening, just before bed, the boy suddenly asked:
“Daddy, would Mommy be happy that I’m talking again?”
Omar sat beside him and hugged him.
“Of course, son. She would be so proud of you.”
“And you won’t go away for a long time again?”
“I’ll do my best to always be here whenever you need me.”
Adam snuggled close to him and fell peacefully asleep for the first time in a long while.
The very same green pencil lay on the bedside table.
Omar could buy his son any toy he wanted and pay for treatment from the best specialists in the world. But it was an ordinary waitress who had helped the boy feel safe enough to finally tell the truth.
And now, the sheikh’s greatest happiness was hearing his own son’s voice every morning.
