The woman’s screams immediately broke the calm. People started rushing over from all directions—some were already calling the police. The young man and the stroller had vanished around a bend in the path, and it seemed impossible to catch up.
I let go of the leash—my dog Oscar, a smart and well-trained Labrador, bolted forward with his nose in the air. He knew how to track by scent, and I hoped his instincts wouldn’t fail.
Minutes felt like hours. The woman was in tears, her hands shaking, barely able to stand. I approached her, placed a hand on her shoulder, and promised, “We’ll find him. Oscar is already on the trail.”
About ten minutes later, we heard barking from behind some bushes. Along with two men who had come to help, we ran toward the sound.
Behind the building of an old café, in the overgrowth, we found the stroller. The child was inside, unharmed—not even crying, just curiously looking around.
And next to the wall stood the same young man, cornered. Oscar was growling, not letting him escape.
It was later discovered that he was a local man with mental health issues. He didn’t realize what he was doing.
The police arrived quickly and took him to the hospital. Fortunately, the baby was unharmed.
The woman hugged me, then knelt before Oscar and pressed his face against hers, unable to hold back her tears.
People applauded—not for me, but for him. Oscar became the true hero of that evening.
Looking at my loyal friend, I realized: sometimes, help comes from those you least expect.
