In the French town of Louviers, located about a hundred kilometers northwest of Paris, there is an extraordinary house whose exterior is made entirely of broken crockery.
The owner of the unusual building was Robert Wasser.
Together with his wife, they decided to abandon the traditional materials used for wall decoration and decorated their house with a mosaic of broken plates, cups, shells, multi-colored phosphor and plain glass.
Wasser was born in 1908, his career was nothing special – he delivered milk, after which he worked in a textile factory.
The idea of decorating the house with broken dishes came to him in 1952, when Robert began renovating his own kitchen.
The first object of his attention in the prism of a new hobby was an old sink, which the man covered with pieces of broken kitchen utensils using cement.
Since then, Vasser’s flight of fancy has only expanded. Robert collected broken dishes from neighbors, which he washed with his wife and used in decorating the house.
He decorated the interior of the entire house with sparkles, then the backyard, then the garden buildings and finally even his dog’s kennel.
This hobby of the Wasser family lasted up to fifty years, during which many townspeople carried materials for them.
In 2002, Robert Wasser completed his life journey. His work was continued by his son Claude.
He restored his father’s works, and even continued his work, preserving the originality of the house which had become legendary.
Thanks to Claude, the building is kept in excellent condition. Guided tours are organized there, thanks to which the house of broken crockery in Louviers remains one of the most popular tourist attractions.
