On the show “American Idol,” each participant carries their own story, but for some, these stories are more inspiring.
When Marsio Donaldson auditioned for “American Idol,” it was evident that he wasn’t just a young man in his twenties dreaming of fame.
Marsio had a lot of responsibilities for his age, and much depended on his chance to break into celebrity.
In Marsio’s arms, there was a six-month-old infant. In late 2016, he learned that his sister was expecting a child.

The joy of becoming an uncle was replaced by tragedy when the baby named Rashad arrived, and his sister couldn’t take care of him.
During the “Idol” auditions, Marsio explained that he was now the father of his nephew. Having grown up in Compton, California, where gangs and drugs are prevalent, Marsio recounted his childhood in a roach-infested dormitory with his mother and sister.
When a social worker and a police officer showed up at his door with a one-week-old baby, Marsio realized that their lives were at a crucial turning point. Marsio’s sister had fallen into the same traps as his mother and couldn’t take care of Rashad.
Faced with the choice of sending the baby into the child protection system or radically changing his life, Marsio made an instant decision.

“I’ll take him,” Marsio told the social workers. “I don’t want him to go through what I went through.”
“I didn’t know what I was doing, but he’s a true gift,” he says now. “I’m sure I made the right choice.”
Music has always been a refuge for Marsio, where he found hope in his vocal talent. Much was at stake in his audition. As soon as he entered the room, judge Luke Bryan took Rashad and asked if he could hold him.
Luke didn’t let go of Rashad during Marsio’s emotional performance, and all the judges were touched by this young man’s story. After Marsio performed Labrinth’s “Jealous,” it was evident that his talent was remarkable.

At the end of the performance, emotions overwhelmed Marsio, and he began to cry. “You’re a good person,” Katy Perry told him. “We should admire you,” Lionel Richie declared before approaching and warmly embracing Marsio.
“Your voice is authentic,” Luke said. “Is it technically perfect? No, man, but it’s authentic. Ride that horse as far as it will take you.”
The judges agreed that Marsio had a beautiful reason to succeed, often more than enough to achieve success.
“We’re always looking for people who sing with emotion, and in you, I love that,” Katy said. “God bless you for being such an incredibly honorable person.”
