When a local farm had to relocate a barn, it wasn’t machines but human strength and solidarity that came to the rescue.
Over 250 Amish men gathered and decided they were ready to collectively undertake this massive task.
This unusual event finds its roots in the history of the Amish and Mennonites, dating back to the Anabaptist movement in 16th-century Europe.
In search of religious freedom, they fled the views of the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland, which opposed child baptism and mandatory military service.
Their journey led them in covered wagons through the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania towards a new promised land.
Today, Holmes County is home to the world’s largest Amish community, stemming from these early settlers. Originally led by Jacob Ammann, the Mennonite faith involved strict rules of brotherhood and excommunication.
About 150 years later, the Amish split off and formed their own sects. The diversity within these communities is astonishing.
There are over a dozen varieties, ranging from ultra-conservative groups to those leading an almost unconventional Amish lifestyle.
The most conservative group rejects modern amenities like cars, electricity, and telephones, preferring horse-drawn buggies for transportation.
The video of this feat of lifting a barn showcases participants belonging to the most conservative sect.
Their traditional attire and reliance solely on human strength rather than machines to move such a massive structure speak volumes about their beliefs and way of life.
The scene at Hochstetler’s farm on Snively Road was spectacular.
Over 200 people surrounded the barn and lifted it in unison. Calmly and harmoniously, they moved the barn to its new location on the farm.
Their movements were synchronized and precise. They moved with confidence, then turned together, placing the barn exactly where they wanted it.
Surprisingly, this entire process took only five minutes, under the watchful eyes of women and other community members.
As one spectator said, “I can’t imagine the coherence with which the women and other members of the community worked:
“I can’t imagine the coherence it took from the whole group to do this work! It was truly amazing to see how everyone worked as one! Well done, gentlemen!”
This extraordinary moment was captured on film and proved the power of community and collaboration.
