What started as a simple attempt to decorate their dorm room turned into an unforgettable experience for a group of college friends — all thanks to one lumpy old couch.
Back in February, several students decided to pick up a used sofa from a nearby Salvation Army store to add some comfort to their dorm. The couch looked ordinary, even a bit worn and musty, but it fit their space — and their budget.
It wasn’t until a few nights later, during a movie marathon, that they realized something was off. The couch’s armrest felt… unusually firm.
SUNY New Paltz geology student Reese Werkhoven recalled the moment clearly:
“I pressed into one of the couch arms and felt something rigid. We unzipped the cushion and inside were bubble-wrapped envelopes — full of hundred-dollar bills!”
As they kept searching, more hidden envelopes surfaced — each one loaded with cash. The students took photos and began tallying up the stash. By the end, they had uncovered over $40,000 in cold, hard cash.
“At first, it felt like a dream,” said roommate Russo. “We were laughing, talking about buying cars or boats. It was surreal.”
But their excitement quickly turned to hesitation. One of the envelopes had a name written on it — and that gave them pause.
“The minute I saw that name, all the adrenaline vanished,” said Guasti, a Mount Holyoke graduate. “It didn’t feel right to keep it.”
Uncertain about what to do, they reached out to their parents, who urged them to do the right thing. With the help of a phone book, Werkhoven’s mother managed to find a contact linked to the name on the envelope.
“I called her and said, ‘Hi, I think I might have found something that belongs to you,’” Werkhoven said. The woman immediately responded, “Oh my God, I’ve been looking for that money!”
The elderly woman, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that the money had been given to her by her late husband as a form of security. Distrusting banks, she had hidden the money inside the couch cushions for safekeeping. During a hospital stay following surgery, her children unknowingly donated the sofa.
The students admitted they almost skipped buying the couch because of its smell and shabby look — but it turned out to be the only one that fit.
In the end, they met the woman and returned every dollar. She rewarded them with $1,000 to split, but for them, the reward was far deeper.
“It just felt like the right thing to do,” said Russo.
Werkhoven added, “You don’t need to be a superhero to make a good choice. Just be decent.”
Would you have done the same — especially for a couch that cost only $20?
